Been moving some gear around since the amp shootout. I bought a new VH4 that I am totally in love with, thinking about dumping my Herbert for an SLO. I've had the Herbert for years and have made a ton of records with it and it just feels like it's time to part ways. I have a VH4, 2 channel Dual Rec (Rack version) and 2 Friedman modded Marshalls (EL34's, 6550's). The SLO seems different enough but not sure. I don't know maybe I don't need anything else, the 4 amps I have cover heavies pretty well; Diezel, Boogie, Marshall that pretty much sums up the style of music I make.

What do you guys think???

Anyone who can, should at least try the SLO. Beware of its abysmal/unusable FX loop and unlike the Herbert, it won't sound very good at non-stage volume levels, however judging by your shoot-out and overall breadth of experience that probably wouldn't be an issue.

I've had two of them, one with the depth mod, and most recently one without. Both times, I was enamored at first, but quickly found that other amps suited ME better. In fact, I traded my last SLO + cash for the Herbert I now own.

I too, thought it was great at first, but really found the midrange fatiguing after awhile and not as wide as I like (very focused high mid voice)...I figured it wasn't worth holding onto anymore, when there are better options available for me that have a more versatile fx loop and a better master volume as well...I was also playing my XTC a lot more...anyways, these might not be issues for you, though...I sold it to fund a Fish preamp to add to my Ecstasy. Here's a clip of the SLO used by High On Fire's, Matt Pike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyBdiCZLPaA ...at 4:37 he goes into a solo...there's where the SLO shined the best for me...the rhythm tone wasn't quite there for me.

Buy one used, you can always flip it if you don't like it. My four main 'real' amps (I have an axe fx, lol) that are non Randall MTS right now are an early dual recto rackmount (92), a Bogner XTC, an SLO, and a handbuilt plexi clone. The SLO upper mids can be strident at times, but MAN it cuts through a mix live and recorded. I have to wonder what cabs people are using with theirs, mine into a V30 cab is pretty nice, but into a GT75 loaded cab is screechy hell.

I would say an avenger! It sounds better to me than a SLO a way more simple circutry as well no FX loops and one channel.

Well I guess you guys answered my question. I think I may sell the Herbert and take the scratch and travel.

Yo James! The SLO sounded amazing on the shootout, but I think you got nearly that same tone and vibe from your '71 Marshall. They are pretty similar. And congratulations on the VH4....nice! I'd love to hear that thing cranked up at my shop. I've been kinda thinking about the 20th anni. XTC myself and maybe running it together with my Marshall for a HUGE sound. We'll see, you know how it is.

Yeah I thought the same thing, I've been listening to the clips and the SLO is similar to the Marshall. I'm lovin the VH4, monster amp. I'll bring it by.

I love the SLO and will never get rid of them. One with KT66s, and one with 5881s. I was there when you got the VH4 and I think they would sound great together. But as always - guitars, pups, cabs, speakers, taste all will determine what you dig. I need to find a day to go to Jerry's and have you come down and you can try mine out.

Dude, that would be great. I'm back in town for a while. Let me know.

I was gonna suggest a VHT/Fryette UL. It'd be a nice contrast to what you have and a different flavor. They're kinda picky about cabs though(seem to sound best with VHT cabs). I like the SLO a lot too though, sounds like you can cover similar ground to it already though.

Let's do it! If you guys work out a day, just let me know and I'll make it happen. The sooner the better for me. Who's gonna bring the fog machine so we can really rock out?

Monday afternoon would work for me.

You've got plenty of great amps and I think you've got your bases covered. Don't you think it's time for a change? Get an axe-fx and a good poweramp, either solid-state of tube. Then you'll have the ultimate versatile portable rig and the best fx unit out there to complement your great amps.

And you could do some serious A/Bing, loads of fun.

I could bring the Faustine too if you want to check that out. What's your schedule Jerry?

Mondays are kinda tough for me, always going crazy getting stuff ready for the week. Anytime Tuesday, Wednesday and the weekend works.
