To you guys that use the 421, show me how you are micing with them? I've not been overly happy with this mic. Seems to have the same character I hear in some of their other mics....Its way nicer than the 609S....Mixing with another mic is cool. Maybe there is a trick to using them?

Check out the clips I just posted...for the Rhodes amp...
I recorded them with the MD421 on the Left, and an e906 on the right...
The trick for the 421 is just to get the placement correct.
e906 is a little less sensitive, but the 421 has to be placed correctly to sound really good.

Cool thanks. That's pretty much where mine is. I'll have to listen when I get home. What position do you have the roll off...mine is usually one click back from the biggest low end.

Listen to my guitars in the link in my sig that links to my recording studio... there are hardcore, metal and indy style songs ALL 421 & SM57 or 421 & Audix i5

I place the 421 towords the edge of the cone but point it slightly towrds the dust cover... The SxTxRx Mosh clip is just one 421 and one VHT cab and a Fireball II 100watt double tracked

Everything else is pretty much Savage 120 and the indy stye songs are Mesa T-Rec and Savage combined excpet for the song wit hthe clean reggae intor all Mesa and 421 and SM57

GIVE IT ALL A LISTEN!!! ITS THE SICKEST MIC w/ a SM57 or i5 for rock and metal guitars IMO...

I had other mics including $1200 Royers, e609, condensers, etc and the 421/57/i5 combo was my hands down goto for recording guitars

I have an MD421 and IMO it's amazing.

play around with your mic placement till you get it right. Takes patience though.

and Most distorted guitars sound better with at least two mics

I'll check them out when I get in my studio over the monitors. I have the I5's as well, good mic for live but don't care for it in the studio. The 609s always had a razorblade quality to it. The Beta 57 is my fave mic and had been using it with the 421...the 421 is just pissing me off at the moment.

Yeah I agree on the two mic thing...Beta 57 /421 or PR30/ 421 or PR30/ Beta 57 had been working well....lost the 421 somehow and trying to get it back....

I use a MD421/e609 and couldn't be happier.
I was happy to get rid of the 609S....didnt work for me.

Messed around with the 421 till about 2:30am....think I have it where I like it again. Would still like to see some other mic placements with it....

421/57 or RE20/57 is a killer combo. I still use the 421 quite often. Placement is all in taste to me. Sometimes its different depending upon cabinet & the type of speaker used. I would just keep tinkering with it. You will eventually find your "sweet spot". :D

I like the 421/ 57 combo a lot, I'm running the 421 a bit off axis between the cone and the edge (closer to the cone) and the 57 right at the outer edge of the cone, each mic on its own track with no eq, bass rolloff on the 421 in the middle position. 421 goes to a UA LA610, and the 57 goes to a TMP-1 mic pre's
Sounds great together
