last few albums by them have been a breath of fresh air consider some that radio friendly stuff they are doing at some point. That album "The System Has Failed" with appearances by Vinny Colaiuta on drums and Chris Poland was excellent. The drumming on that album really takes it to a new level.

I decided to try Endgame and I love it. Dave's 'hired guns' don't come up with those songs and the changes; they play solos. DM is flat out an awesome songwriter and quite frankly more responsible for the sound of the first three Metallica records than people realize. I am the first to admit music is subjective but in no way can Metallica compete with what Dave is still doing. They are different bands and have been as soon as JH and LU came up with their own sound and went with it 100%. Can't comment on the whole Death Magnetic album but the one song I heard was adolescent lyrically and musically it sounded contrived.

after the black album, megadeth is more consistantly better metal than metallica. even risk stomps load and reload.

i love andy sneap's work on the most recent megadeth stuff. great tone and mix. dave's riffs are still killer and tight. though i love me some mighty hetfield, it's hard to play hungry and angry when your rich and powerful.

i understand that musicians must grow and stretch their legs. but i guess i have not grown up musically at all in the last 20 years, because the new havok cd is what metallica used to be, and i'll be damned if old school thrash like that doesnt still make me wanna go ballistic. the new generation of fast heavy angry metal is kicking all sorts of ass, and they learned it at the feet of hetfield and dave.

I don't really buy that. Metallica's "sound" was exponentially better on their first 5 albums than most of what Dave was ever responsible for. He's written some great songs and riffs but one thing that always stopped me from really getting into them was how horrible his guitar tone was for the first half of his career. Well, that and I never could deal with his voice except for about 1 out of every 5 songs. Sounds like he's trying to sing and pinch a loaf at the same time

That said, I really don't care for either band's newer stuff but the tone on Endgame was pretty good.

Material on Endgame is weak and I do not like the over-processed sound.

End Game is better than some of the stuff out there, I think the problem is that Mustaine may have decided to appeal to the technical playing of the new generation with these guys like Loomis and Broderick. The result is some really impressive songs, but I think a few songs fell down because of the agenda in a number of the songs that are really political. Broderick and Mustaine definitely lay down some wicked stuff on that work though. Watching them play it live is really cool too.

I will give props to Metallica for basically staying a "band" for all these years. Megadeth has been Mustaine and hired guns for years. Imagine what Hetfield could do if he just had to hire super fresh and talented rhythm sections for each album. The more I think about it it's not a fair comparison. It's cool but also a shame Jame's cares so much about the "family" of a band and never had that breaking point with Lars creatively speaking.

Plus we'll never know for sure but in my gut I believe Cliff had a large part in how early Metallica arrangements were made. Maybe more him and James than Lars. I just can't believe that Lars was ever that talented.

dude, don't let the Anti-lars feeling blind you.....if you've seen any metallica documentary in the studio you can clearly see that Lars has A LOT to do with the production of every metallica record.... IMO the problem with lars has been the lack of hunger to prove people wrong and a HUGE lack of PRACTICE...... his drumming on Ride/Master/Justice was actually very good..... not up to par with Lombardo/Jordison etc.... but very good. Nowadays he's sucking a lot I'm aware.

But when it comes to production and arrangements Lars has been pivotal in Metallica's success.

Again, IMO a band is not about how technically you are, it's about how good your fans and the band feel about the material and the whole experience (records, touring, etc) and Metallica seems to be the biggest band in Heavy Metal, simply because of that..........the metallica fans simply LOVE metallica man, and they love the music and the energy, no matter if lars is out of time or james is pitchy here and there.......or even if Hammett's bends are way off.

Lars sucks. Always has. End of.

I hope they aren't revisiting Load / Reload again, who knows maybe we can get a 10minute plodding "Sweet Jane" with Wizard amps and Metallica crunch (lol).
