He was endorsing the Blue Voodoo later in the 90s, yeah, maybe around Cryptic writings or Risk?

For Rust in peace I suppose some prototype of the 3+ could have come in at the very end of recording, but it feels early. All the first guys to switch to the CAE were still using the Soldano X88R in 1990.

The CAE 3+ is Countdown to Extinction. I think there may have been a BBE in there too, or just lots of EQ. But that album is screaming CAE. I don't think you can get a Rust in Piece sound out of a 3+.

I remember when I used the BBE 482i I was able to cop Countdown tone on a lot of the amps I played it thru. That certain 'scoop' tone.

For sure, Countdown sounds like pure 100% CAE. I wasn't really implying that RIP was the CAE, more acknowledging that it isn´t entirely impossible it could have found its way onto some tracks somewhere.

I also thought it was CAE 3+SE preamp and VHT 2150 power ... the Fish might have been in the studio but not on the record. It certainly doesn't sound like a Fish pre IMHO.

If it really was a proto CAE as early as that it´s probably closer to the normal 3+ and not the 3+ SE. More bite and less thickness than the later version.

That sounds right. The 3+ was brighter (which I like). And The SE mod did come till later.

they toured that album with the bogner fish and vht's, there is a concert video of that tour on youtube where you can see the guitar racks. one of the fishes had a bunch of different color knobs on it. lol
imo the rust in peace sound is in the fish and it was either the fish or the triple giant on record.
3+ came with the next record.

I had a Hafler Triple Giant and it didn't sound like that. I wish when I had it I had sent it to Voodoo to be modded...

Clearly a CAE preamp for the Countdown tour.

In this vid, from around 31:15 into the video, you can see a clear shot of Marty's rig (He and Nick are joking about him going through the tuner and direct to the FOH-board) , and it's clearly a Triple-Giant going through a VHT poweramp

Here's a triple giant for comparison

I'm guessing Dave is also running through a similar rig, so for the tour(s) supporting the Rust In Piece album, it was Bogner all the way.

If you listen to 'Go to Hell' which is also a very cool tune that features Friedman and Mustaine trading licks at the end of the song, the tone is different, but I think it's due to lower production than anything else, but same line up and very close on the timeline (I think 'go to Hell' was written for Bill and Teds Bogus Journey).

If my Hafler version Triple Giant had sounded that good I'd have kept it.

I've wondered about that myself- the tone could just be a difference in mixing or production. I remember reading that the song was originally intended to be on RIP, cant' verify that though. Either way, the song is killer and so is the tone.

Some of you may remember I played in a band with Menza for years. When I walked in with my xtc classic for the audition he literally said "is that yours? We used bogners on Rust in Peace." So at least as far as he was concerned, it was bogner (I dunno if was triple giant or fish) and he played a lot of guitar too believe it or not and def knew gear.
