Sucks to have to sell stuff to buy stuff. But that's the reality when you have kids.
This...
I have theory that if I spend a bunch in high end gear it actually makes me a better player because if im going to invest the coin in the nice stuff, I better damn well invest the time i have to being a better player and justify spending that much in my own mind...
I found this to be true for me with my Mark IV (not that a used Mark IV is a particularly "high dollar" amp).
But, what I did find was that the Mark IV was much more unforgiving that any of my other amps that I currently had. It caused me to focus on my playing. Making my playing more precise became a goal.
And, once my playing began to improve, I found that I was choosing to play with a lot less gain than I used to play with.
It's embarrassing to admit it, but I had gotten somewhat lazy. I used to have a Mesa S.O.B. (great amp) and a Marshall Mark-II Lead (another great amp) back when I lived in Connecticut. Both amps caused me to be a better player in the groups I was in. But, the were stolen from me. Due to finances, I replaced them with lower level amps. The replacement amps were much more forgiving, and my playing suffered because of it. I became lazy.
This was one aspect of saving up for and getting a higher level amp that I had not considered. When the Mark IV came in and I started playing, I realized how much I had let myself go (so to speak).
Thanks for reading.
PS: (Totally off the wall and somewhat off-topic). I sometimes wish that we could have a "meet" here in NE Tennessee (or SW Virginia) where you could bring your amps and let people how didn't have the same amp as you (but always wanted to play through one just to see what it was like) could do so.
I would love to attend something like that. There are several amps that I would love to play through, but they are out of my financial reach for me to "buy and try" one:
- Mesa Heartbreaker
- Mesa Stiletto
- Mesa LSS
- Bogner Goldfinger
- Marshall Silver Anniversary
(You may now return to the original thread. Thanks for allowing me to interrupt).
