man I would do terrible things for a mark III. I have been THIS ___ close to scoring a mark III twice. I have already promised myself one with my upcoming tax return.  What's a fair price for one of these nowadays. Any thing I should know if I am considering rack mounting it?

Around $800 or so, depending on condition. For rack mount, it just needs to be the short body one, not the long body. You can buy the rack mount conversion kits direct from Mesa if you happen to get a head or combo. Here's all the skinny on Mark III stripe history and revisions....

I would say IV for clean and lead and III for the agressive tight rythm sound.

BTW SED Winged =C= 6l6's are amazing with mark series amps.

That's exactly the configuration I am leaning towards - A/B'ing the III and IV. If there are a couple of adjectives for the Mark III, it is TIGHT and AGGRESSIVE (sounds like an old girlfriend). It is the most awesome sounding rhythm amp I have ever played through for heavy and thrash - hands down. Very three-dimensional and full-bodied (not like an old girlfriend).

Putting in an order for new tubes as we speak for the III, IV and V. SED's is a given for power duties. The amps are very responsive to different tubes in the preamp section. Looking for a couple good NOS tubes for V1 and V3 duties. Leaning toward the Jan Phillips MIL spec 12AX7WA's. Seems all the German RFT's are gone from the market.

Hell, I have come full circle and right back where I started - with Mesa. It only cost me $30,000 to get here

I put an NOS Telefunken smooth plate in V1 on my Mark IV and it was an amazing difference. Much smoother...

I still havent messed with preamp tubes with my mark IV im kind of scared to since i have the perfect sound that was in my head, So i might stick with the stock mesa preamp tubes, but the Dougs tube preamp cocktail is tempting as well. hmm...

I might have to try this

Just to interject on the tube part. NOS in V1 and V2 do wonders for Mark series amps (Being a twisted Mesa fan boi myself) Tad 6l6GC or the old "Winged C" for EL34's.

Have you tested the SED Winged C 6L6's against the TAD's? What did you think? Which NOS tubes did you like in V1 of your Marks?

Still got the Herbert and VH4. Just into the old Mark series amps right now. The tone of this Mark III is doing for me right now. Probably won't have much use for the VH4 and it may disappear, but the Herbert stays for the long haul. That's how I'm rollin right now.
