ok, so some of you might know I have been looking to possibly pickup a mark III in the near future....BUT i've never played a mark series amp. I know, it's sad...
Anyway, my amp whore buddy has recently acquired a Mark IV and I am gonna go play it this weekend. I'm fuckin stoked!

So here's what I'm curious about- is there some settings on the Mark IV that would be easily replicated on a Mark III?
In other words, could I possibly demo some Mark III sounds on this Mark IV? How close are the III & IV tone/gain wise? Obviously the IV is MUCH more flexible, but what differences are there between the two?

As always, thanks in advance!

Nick

Don't know how close the III and IV are but here are some settings that might interest you.

The III and IV are not even close. If you dig the IV, you will cream your jeans over the III. There is much less to fiddle with on the III. If you are after metal and want to move air, here are my setting on my Mark III (red stripe head):

V - 8
T - 7
B - 4
M - 5 (Pulled)
MV - 3 (Pulled)
LD - 7 (Pulled
LM - 2

EQ in always and in a classic V (90%, 40%, 10%, 50%, 80%)

Depending on your playing volume, you can either do like I have here with the Lead Master lower than the Master Volume, which will make it less compressed and really sing at higher volumes. For bedroom volumes to get some sustain and compression, you can run the Lead Master up to 7 or 8 and turn the Master Volume to around 1.5.

hmm, im gonna have to disagree with that, ive played iii's and own a iv. the iv can pretty much do any tone the iii can do. and the lead tones to my ears are pretty damn similiar. so in my opinion yes you can try out iv settings and see how close you get if thats the tone you are going for

that's the cool thing, you can disagree and be my guest. my mark iv(a) sounds great, but i don't think it sounds like the III or IIC+ and not that i would want it to.

My Mark III settings are very similar to Steve's. I don't know about the Mark IV but with the III every little tiny adjustment will change the sound. And that's not even using the eq, so there are tons of good sounds and just as many bad sounds so you really have to spend some time with the mark III to get to where you want to be. I think this is why some people just don't like them because they are very finicky to dial in. Don't be surprised if you don't find the sound you are looking for right away it took me quite awhile to really be happy with that amp.
That being said now I will never, ever sell my Mark III :D

Check out the boogie board..Its all there about the III's and IVs..I have a IVB and love it...also used to have a III...wish I still had it...Im looking to buy a quad to send to boogie for the MKIIC+ mods...been hearing great things about that mod.
