Why all the different sizes?

Which is best or most collectable? etc etc ...

Keith

well, they'll sound different to some degree with the proximity of the different components.

Ken Fisher said he could hear the difference in insulation color on the wire due to the different dye content and the magnetic field it created.

Then he should hang out with Eric Johnson. They'll all sound roughly the same. I'm willing to bet that the difference in tubes causes way more tonal difference than the proximity and tolerance of components. I personally like short heads because they can be rackmounted.

There are only 2 sizes: Short and long (aka medium)...

Same thing, only differences are between A and B, Short heads are more commonly taken from combos or rackmounted. It's kinda cool, I wish more companies made short heads, it would be fun to rackmount stuff, or make your own cool custom rack case..

Yeah, I kinda don't get it either. I think the "short" heads are the same that are in the combo cabs and they can be rack mounted, right? Then why did they even make the longer heads in the first place? Seems like redundant stuff to me that would make manufacturing the amps slightly more costly?

Because of the size, some features have to be added to the rear. Some people might dislike always having to reach in the rear to adjust something. Also, the longer ones tend to "look better" (read: look more like a normal head) when placed on top of cabinets.

I've had a Short version and 4 medium/long versions. They all sounded the same to me, with exception to this one I own now because of the power tubes. The short heads are cute and all, but it's a pain in the butt changing out the power tubes in them.

The short heads look goofy to me sitting on top of a 4x12, I guess thats why I always have gone with the long chassis ones.

If that is the case, i should hear a difference in my tone by losing 10 pounds off of my beer belly. My guitar would technically resonate differently against my stomach yielding a different tone. Maybe it will make my basswood axe sound more like mahogany. :)

Didn't Eric Johnson claim he could hear the difference between Duracell and Energizer batteries in his stomp boxes? I guess one 9v can sound different than another 9v.

I think that's gonna be a little tricky ;)

I have a MARK IV short head and I love how compact it is and how freakin' awesome it sounds!

9v's can sound different, and ESPECIALLY in a fuzztone. Put in an alkaline or a old style carbon, I bet you could even hear the difference. :)

Ken certainly had bat ears but he also had a great sense of humor ;) But with that said I'd take a long chassis for the sake of yourself or any poor bastard that has to work on it. I've got my mark III that's a loaded short chassis in pieces right now waiting for some new ldr's and the real estate inside would be priceless. Tight like gnat booty, not fun but I respect the dude at mesa that had to assemble more than one of these in a day without shooting someone.
