Mesa Rectifier Multiwatt?

It’s been 19 years since I’ve owned a rectifier, and I’m considering checking out a multiwatt. I’m mainly curious about the loop and volume. I can play loud where I’m at, but I do prefer something that can sound good at manageable levels too.

- Can these sound good at bedroom level and does the volume have a smooth taper? Any difference between the dual and triple in that regard?
- What’s the story on the loop - is it a tone sucker or is it good? Do you need to use the loop to get the power amp working at manageable levels?

Absolutely not. I had a "Reborn" multiwatt 3 channel, and it was loud as hell. And it went from zero to loud as hell in a heartbeat. Sure, you can dial in lower volume, but it sounds like shit until you goose it, and just a small goose and it's too much.

I actually loved it, but it was unusable for low volume.
 
a cranked up triple recto mult-watt is definitely in my top 5 amps. I think it can be decent at moderately loud room volumes, but it shines when you crank it up.
 
Had a 2014 MW Dual and I could get decent low volume tones, but kind of goes without saying that to get the goods it needed to be loud. Volume taper on mine was a bit touchy but I've had much much worse. MXR in the loop solved that issue. Unusable for me without a boost up front, but I'm that way with every amp for metal tones. I used an MXR in the loop and a boost out front with lower gain settings and treble @ zero and at volume it was phucking mean & raw!
 
Gotcha. Thanks for input you all. What are you all’s thoughts on the loop - is it transparent?
 
My TriAxis and Mark V Loops were pretty damn good. They are Tube driven after all so if you think it kills your topend, you can roll in a bright tube..
 
I love the Multi-Watts. What I do is the Mesa 5-band in the loop and use the volumes as an attenuator. Makes it decent at lower volume.

You might check out Xtreme mode on a Mark Five 25. They are much more usable at low volume and that voicing has a recto-ish thing going on.
 
I’ve had a dual and 3-4 MultiWatt Triples, with the loop engaged you can get ball crushing tones at bedroom volume levels, however you absolutely need an OD set for clean boost to get the most of it.
 
TremoVerb is basically a Rev G with an extra tube for the tremolo from what I was told. They’re killer sounding as well and can be had for pretty cheap these days. However, a couple year old Triple Recto MultiWatt is what I’d get if you want a Recto. I recently bought one from a buddy and he wasn’t in love with it. Just so happened when I got it it sounded terrible to me as well. New Mesa 6L6’s and a few new preamp tubes got it sounded incredible quick. That’s what I’d suggest. I don’t know much about Boogies other than they sound great when dialed in - don’t listen to the folks that diss Mesa’s.

The triple is the one that has most of my attention. In the clips I’ve heard, I tend to prefer in over the dual. Do you find the triple needs to be louder to give the goods?
 
Triple just has more authority and grunt vs the Dual. Sounds great at any volume.
