Riff, my favorite cab to run with the ultra is my mesa. Right now it is through a marshall 1960b with g12m70s. They are ok speakers, a bit bassy and muddy.
My mesa cab sounded almost the same, or similar anyways, with the evms. Figured I would load them up in a 212 or some thieles.
Ahh ok, well in case you dont recall, I found an Ultra+ for my other guitar player. So far Ive tried V30's, WGS HM75's, Eminence Tonkers, & some carvin & musicmans.
The best were Tonkers by far.. not sure why, but the clarity & mids just work great with that amp..
Next were the V30's, HM75's were muddy with it.

Very different from what I like with my 6505+, HM75's are the thing there!

For some reason Ive always had this dislike for EVM12L's, although theyre robust sons of bitches!

You guys all also know there's a very significant difference in sound between 8ohm and 16ohms, Marshall wired for 16ohm, Mesa wired for 8, the Mesa's are going to have a darker sound, more rolled off highs, not as much bite, and a bit loser low end. You can even try it if you have a 16ohm cab and take your line out of your amp from 8/16 for a safe mismatch, you can hear the difference really easily.

G12M70's are my least favorite Celestion, I highly recommend about anything else....

How can you use the same speakers(if they're not the same, this could be the difference for the sound)...and the same number of them(if not the same number, the airspace is doubled *in the same box...and if not the same box...*which will change the sound)...and wire a cab at 8ohm OR 16ohm?

???

Yeah I am not a fan. They aren't terrible, but they don't really do anything for me at all. That cab is awesome though, its a 1987

Oh I know, sounds simple except she handles their money, & seems to know if he spends a penny.. The level of pussy-whippedness that some guys allow is mind boggling!

Am I the only person that prefers Mesa Vintage 30s that are NOT broken in?

From my experience with one Mesa 412 and two Mesa 212s that I purchased, they sound great at first and gradually become less defined in the mids. They get more saggy as they age.

I like the tight and defined sound when they are brand new.

Mesa V30's are cool. I always thought they use different magnets. Think I got this from Trace at Voodoo.

I hate them when not broken in. I had a Bogner OS2x12 recently that was without a doubt, one of the worst sounding cabs I've had the displeasure of hearing and I'm 99% sure it was because the V30's weren't broken in. My friend also has a regular Bogner 4x12 that's one of the best sounding cabs I've heard, V30's in that as well but that cab has a lot of wear and tear on it.

1. If you call Mesa and ask, they will tell you the highs are a bit pulled back from the standard V30's. This has been
confirmed on many occasions over at the Boogie Board. The Mesa-spec V30's are only made for Mesa so Bogner,
Orange and others use standard Chinese V30's.

2. Black Shadows were never V30's, but were mostly C90's and some EV's.

3. No Idea about the cone codes.

4. A broken in Mesa V30 sounds incredible. New they are harsh and kind of thin IMO.

The Mesa V30s are much smoother and not as bright as the regular V30s sold currently. I like both to be honest, and love V30s at loud volumes. I will say though that the Mesa V30s comPletu lack that weird top end sizzle that the newer V30s have. I never understood what that was, but it definitely adds some character.

Mesa's V30s also don't seem to require the same amount of break-in time either. At least it seemed that way to my ears.

I think all the OEM V30 variants sound better than standard V30s, which are the most cardboard and screechy sounding IMO. I also think the latest Chinese ones are the softest and fuzziest out of them all.

There is a blind shootout somewhere in this forum that compares Mesa v30s and regular v30s I think. I don't rmbr which I liked best, but I believe the regular v30s won in the shootout. Could have had something to do with the eq, different cabs...idk.
