is it just me or are these v30s way the fuck better than the normal ones in every way?

im pretty sure there is a real difference here though. my coguitarist had a pos 4x12 slant cab and the bottom speakers were blown so we wired it for only the 2 v30s in the top (60w) would be running. when i took the 2 mesa v30s out of my cab, we put them in that cab and it sounded way better.

They are indeed constructed a little differently, verified by Mesa and Celestion, resulting in a different tone. The Mesa ones are darker, chunkier and break up a tad less. The regular ones have a more vintage honk and upper sizzle, maybe works better with older school amps.

Dunno, my only extended experience with V30's have been with the 70 watt Mesa ones.

anyone else here not a fan of evms?
do you think i wpuld be safe in stereo with my mark iii and titan with all v30s? it would be rated at 240w

I recently A/B'd a V30 taken from a Mesa cab and one I bought a few years ago from a local shop. Both were used extensively, and well broken in. The Mesa one sounded MUCH better, with much better deffinition and a very nice sizzle. I sold the "regular" one the next day. Now I have a big problem: where do I find another one that sounds as good ? :(

If you run the cab stereo, you'll get 120 per amp, which would be just fine!

Dunno, maybe it's because they use the English made ones? Other than that I didn't know there was really a difference. I always credited their cab construction for the better tone. The v30's in my 212 sound great, and traditional 412's sound even better.

By Mesa V30's do you mean the speakers that come stock in Mesa cabs?

If I recall, the speakers in the MODE 4 cabs were modded V30's similar to the Mesas??

Also I thought the Mills cabs used these..

Just going off my weak ass memory..

my splawn cab is loaded with k100 and mesa v30, its a nice sounding combination.

When I talked with J Marshall at Mesa several years ago while I had a low level endorsement with them, he said Mesa is contracted with Celestion to give them V30s that fall into a certain frequency response. They are made the same, they just test and pass a certain frequency response requirement to get shipped to Mesa.

Whats weird is that they still call something that's no longer truely a "V30" by the same name. Obviously something had to change (cone angle or weight, ribs, dope, spider, magnet, glue)..

why not just call it something else! ;)

I thought the same thing a year back. I bought "aftermarket" v30's for my Marshall 2x12. It had a very high frequency sizzle to it and I had to turn all my highs and presence almost all the way down. This wasn't true of my Mesa 4x12, so I put 2 of these into the Marshall cab and the high shrill was gone. I thought I was just goin crazy (or I was biased to the Mesa) so I never brought the topic up.

Maybe I am reading into it, but it sounds like Celestion is 'sorting' production vintage 30's for them. They send ones that fall within a certain range to mesa and the rest to everyone else.

Mesa just specifies a certain frequency response. They are still V30 by design and build, but two speakers that come off the assembly line side by side will have different responses when tested. Mesa just wants the ones that meet their specs.
