in my amp conquests I’ve been on a Marshall kick lately , love the aggressive mods and the open Almost bright aggressive you can’t get with them . But I’ve actually never owned a Mesa amp . And for more aggressive “metal” music which I mostly play , I guess that my be a strange thing. I’m wondering if Mesa can get that wide open bark and growl that a Marshall can. I know this Varys from model to model , but I’m considering adding a Mesa for shits and giggles so what should I look for ?

what’s your favorite metal tones that used a Mesa ?

My 1st reference would be Metallica but a iic+ Is out of the question haha ?.

If you play metal any Mark IIC+ or later. Any Rectifier. You will probably want something from the Tube Screamer family to tighten it up.

I have a Mark IV, Tremoverb and Heartbreaker. I have own and used many others. I wouldn't recommend a Heartbreaker for metal. Heartbreaker does Blackface, Tweed, Mark I and JTM type stuff. Any Mesa is capable of a wide variety of styles of music.

If you want something in the Marshall family of sounds look at a Stiletto. I had a Trident series one.

Many Mark talk I find here lately... I just gotten my Mark IV... Dial up the beast using the sensitive 5 band EQ and I gotta rewarding trash tone... I try finding the LOG YouTube rig manifest by premier guitar...and found that LOG didn't really boost the bass side of their EQ...

If you want that wide open organic bark, you want something between a late Mark IIB and a Mark III green stripe, possibly on into the Mark IVa. By the IVb they started to get darker & more compressed.

Green stripe and 4a definitely!

metallica is all over the place tone wise, RtL has the more open marshal "bark and growl" where the black album is compressed and smooth. if your marshall has a loop id say just grab the mesa 5 band eq and do the classic V, it gives every amp i use it with more of the "mesa" vibe.
