Messing with the VFE Pinball and Standout. Short crap clip

He just posted a crap load of pedals being built on Instagram. So maybe a few will be up for sale ?

That clip sounds phenomenal! Just ordered a Pinball as a result. How do the Pinball and Dragon differ?

Pinball is a EQ. Dragon is a distortion. Standout is a overdrive.

That’s what I already understand, but they all act as tone shaping boosts, and I’m wondering how those two differ.

The Pinball is more for shaping your original tone. The dragon is like a tube Screamer, but you can shape the high and low pass filters. This is a major detail in the Standout, Pinball and Dragon. Then with the 3 way switch, you can really shape the sound. I’m willing to bet other manufacturers are going to copy this design.

That said, there is a little learning curve on the VFE pedals. You have to play and turn knobs to hear what’s going on. The switch in the center does a lot and you can’t expect to use it and get a good sound without turning the knobs.

I've used the Dragon and Standout. Have not used the Pinball.

I meet Peter Rutter years ago. He doesn't live that far from me. Your not going to meet a nicer person. To nice to be in the music business maybe.

His work is impeccable. I think Dave is right about others are going to copy his work...if they are not already.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I bought the Pinball(it’s on the way) to act as a clean boost and to tighten the amp and give it more grind, without sacrificing low end. I’m wondering if I should have went with a Dragon or Standout. Can I get this from the Pinball?

The Pinball can add some push, but not like the Dragon or Standout. Don’t worry though until you try it. You’ll be surprised. Sadly, these pedals aren’t being made anymore though. Check out the VFE website.

I clean boost to tighten loose amps and add some grind moreso than to add a bunch of gain anyway. Sounds like it’ll work. Thanks again.

Here is a clip of a Rev 2 Uber with the Dragon and Standout. I didn’t bother with the Pinball since I wanted to drive the front of the Uber. Please note that I have the makeup trim pot in the Standout set low, which is why I turn up the level knob 1/2 way. In the room the Dragon sounds fuller.

That Uber is already Uber tight! Is that stock or have you “tinkered” with it? :D
These pedals sound killer. I just went ahead and ordered a Dragon from VFE’s site. Don’t wanna miss the party on these before he sells out his stock.

I removed 1 cap from the preamp on the Uber. The cap was shunting highs to ground. Removing the cap opened up the sound a lot. Made the amp feel better in my hands a well. The cap can be easily put back if I ever sell the amp...

Good move snagging a Dragon.
