So i've been looking around for a new amp now for weeks. I'm gonna go with a 4x12 cab with v30s.

So the ones i liked the most is the ENGL Fireball 60 (note: I'm mostly going to play inside an apartment)

And the Randall Warhead X2

So basiclly it's tube vs transistor.

I mostly play heavy/trash metal but i also want to be able to play some cleans.

The Randall goes for about $500 and the ENGL about $900
I think it would be interesting to se your opinions.

Also concidering a 5150 but 100w tubes and crank that would get me evicted from my home pretty quickly :scared:
If you know any other amps that might sound better for maximum $900 tell me :)

between the two?

the engl's cleans are what you would call working musicians cleans - meaning it works, but it is definately not a vox/fender/insert chimey amplifier here/ type of clean.

gain wise i much prefer the engl's - symphony x used fireball 60's on record for odessey and it slays - brutally heavy.

Pretty sure that album was a Powerball with Recto leads. Was the 60 even around in 2002? The 100 watt version came out in '09.

i know for the longest time he used fireball 60's - might have the album confused, was pretty sure it was on odessey when he started using them. i have read interviews where he says he records 100% dry and adds effects post recording. non of this is anything i am making up - heard/read it from the man himself and even saw his recording studio stack of amplifiers next to his caparison line of guitars - nothing but line 6 HD's and two fireball 60's and a madison prophecy

For good sound at low volumes and good cleans the 5150 is not what you'd be looking for more than likely. Of the amps you mentioned the fireball would probably be you your best bet but if you haven't considered a Mesa MarkIII maybe you should give them a look. Good thrash tones, good cleans and sound good at low volume.

5150 fuck it

5150 + Apartment = Eviction

The original 5150 combo I had would damn near rattle the windows out of my house as soon as it hit audible volume.

That's what i thought :D

Well i've been looking into mesas and they are quite pricey but i found a Mesa Boogie 2:ninety for 900$. Never heard the amp tho. Gonna look some more into it.

Couldn't find a mark III anywhere tho.

I listen much to Pantera and Dime used the X2, that's why i'm intressted.

I'm looking at the Jet City JC100HDM.

It's basically a Soldano SLO100 with a 1/2 power switch and a depth(low end) knob and a much lower price tag.

I'm really thinking of selling my 5150 II for one. Awesome cleans.

Apartment playing? ENGL Gigmaster 15

The Blackstar HT-5 has some really nice high gain tones and gets kinda loud for a 5 watt amp, but the cleas lack, apparently this isn't the case with the HT-20 and upwards.

I think none of them have a good clean or distorted sound. If you compare to a 5150/Fireball/X2.

the clean on the X2 isn't bad, MUCH better than a 5150

But how is the gain on the X2 compared to the 5150?
I would love to check out a X2 some day.
