I forced myself to listen to some metal yesterday on my cable tv metal radio station. Most of it was recent, within the last couple of years.

I was weaned on the Randy Rhoads Ozzy, which I know isn't considered heavy by today's standards, but certainly was then.

I gots ta tell ya, the stuff I heard was pretty much shit. Clickety-click kick drums, a preponderence of muted chug notes (whatever the lowest string on the guitar happened to be tuned to), and the vocals....

Gracious, there wasn't a melody to be found in the vocals. Just a bunch of screamers droning into their mikes. Such originality.

Who here likes this stuff and can you name a couple of metal bands that are actually good?

+1 on new metal for me, I cant stand the cookie monster stuff. The last metal band that really did it for me was Pantera. Guess I am showing my age.

Where is todays Over The Mountain or Crazy Train? Where is todays IronMan? Everyone is dark and heavy but who is really writing a seriously heavy tune that can still be played on the radio? The only current metal band that does anything for my is Nevermore and the vocals can be a little difficult to listen to.

You're music is nothing but noise and you play it too damn loud. Now get off my lawn.

i love the clickity clank drummers, the lowest tuned notes on a guitar, the fast rhythm paces, the odd timing signatures, and most of all the cookie monster vocals.

any band that has talent can bring the head banging.

listen to what you enjoy. thats all that really matters.

just because you dislike it does not mean everyone else does.

to each their own

  It's not your age Brad, I'm 27 and I feel the same way. It's just watered down crap and everyone has to fit into some kind of category and they all sound the same. There are so many categories now I can't tell the difference between metalcore, hardcore, grindcore, sludge, doom, drone, emo screamo, death metal, melodic death metal    Whatever happened to regular old metal?

Funny.....we just learned "I'm Broken" by Pantera last night and that is about as "NU METAL" as my old ass wants to get....... ;)

It seems to me that in current metal there is a huge lack of talent. Especially with the vocalists. I won't call them singers, because they are not. I cut my teeth on great bands with great singers. I would rather listen to older stuff that was really good than listen to current stuff that is crap, just because in is new.

Metal music today: what's wrong with it?

Nothing, sands of time and all of that.

I wouldn't stress out about trying to force yourself to like something because it's more contemporary, let it be a natural process if you dig it it's cool...

It comes down to the root of music, melody. If there's no melodic content, then it's rhythmic based, which means it's related to rap and hip-hop.

Lack of talent? Singing is one thing, but you can't deny the massive talent found in today's metal guitarists.

I resemble that remark

code, it's true that today's guitarist is better than a generation ago across the board. Hell, there's tons of youtube shredders who are awesome that you've never heard of.

They can do the scales quickly, but are they musically talented? I'm not saying none of them are talented musically, of course, but I do question their song writing skills.

And which metal solo makes you go: hey, I really want to learn that memorable solo?

I would say pretty much none of them. Yet you wanted to learn every Randy solo.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head with the vocals, along with most of the songs have the same generic warp speed double bass going on and pretty much have the same basic premise going on. Metal guitarists have always been talented but IMO it's to the point where it's all starting to sound like the same watered down junk. It's like listening to the same song over and over again :scared:

+1 on Mastodon

As soon as I saw this thread, Crack the Skye was the first thing to come to mind. It's been on almost daily rotation for me since it came out.
