Metal music today: what's wrong with it?

I think it's still just a matter of two different mindsets and perspectives. It's hard to digest some of the newer stuff when you've been raised on harmony, melodic content and structured phrasings... That being said, some of the newer stuff is written by the newer age cats, and a lot of the newer age cats have grown up on rapid fire video games, 12+ hours of TV a day, and instant gratification without the work - so if one verse of a song sounds kinda good, hell, play it 10x faster and for the entire length of the song and there ya have it....new metal.

Alright, that last statement will get me a kick to the nuts for sure - but I'm just thinking that with the way music is today, it's more image than it is talent. I think this was touched on in a previous post. Back 'in the day', music was sold on its merit and talent - there were barely any videos to go around showcasing the 'metal pirate armour and savage beast hair' and shit, it was just music that we listened to. Now?? It's all about the packaging, and even if the singer sounds like shit - if he looks the part - they'll voxmod it to work with the recording and go from there. Like I said in my previous post, if they suck live, they suck period.

ANYWAY - different strokes fer different folks. I think most of today's metal is unmusical, and the vocals are f'n annoying. That's just me though. And I couldn't care less if you're wailing out 128th's on your scales, if it's not musical or doesn't have feel, it's just noise.

I agree 100% with this, some of the guitar and drum stuff from a technical aspect is amazing but pretty much its a bunch of musicians trying to impress each other.

Vocals are pretty much all cookie monster or screamo garbage and the lyrical content is just generic stuff about weeping wounds or avian botulism zombification induced psoriasis. When writing lyrics for your cookie monster band the more macabre words you find in the Thesaurus that are more than three syllables the "better" the album name or song title. :thumbsdown:

I remember when people used to write about real stuff like loss, addiction and inner struggle.
 
There's no less soul in the music than Master of Puppets.
 
The only good newer band I like/listen to is OPETH.......These guys kick ass! Cookie monster vocal arent my thing, but Akerfeldt can actually sing, and does in many songs along with the screams. Great musicianship and songwriting that really takes you by surprise

He's a very underrated guitarist with something that most newer metal bands don't have.....Originality :thumbsup:

If you said Death Magnetic I would 100% agree with you but Masters of Puppets was very good from conveying emotions with the lyrics. I mean the thing was a concept album with a very well done theme. Justice was a great lyrical album as well...

no worries rock on! I'm sure I'll have lot's of complaints when I'm old and Justin Bieber is doing some revival tour.

Anyhow, what's wrong with metal...

not enough inovation. Too much of it sounds like some kids decided to play crazy train faster and dirtier. boring.

There are still metal bands using 6 string guitars. come on. boring.

Not enough gain on amps. again boring.

Not enough bands with 2 guitarists of equal skill. boring.

actually I think the biggest problem is too much exposure. in the past only the really good bands would get play and attention, now anyone with a youtube and a myspace can start an internet band.

that being said still lots of goodness around




also mastadon high on fire etc.
 
I could do without all the theatrical bullshit in today's metal. These bands that want you to think they are satan's chosen one's is ridiculous. All the demonic crap really gets on my nerves. If you are a satanist then fine, if you're not, quit pretending, you just look stupid.

I love European power metal, it's what I listen to most, besides the classics. Bands like Dream Evil, Accept, Hammerfall, Iced Earth, and especially Primal Fear. Musically, those pussy screamo/growl wannabe bands can't hold a candle to the guys that don't need the theatrical crap or "look at me, I have daddy issues" vocals. They have just good 'ol fashioned metal to play.



 
I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to bust out with the "crabcore" video. Just as in any genre, there are a number of bands/musicians that make the whole genre look badly.

What is this, the fucking Gear page? Metal is not the same as 30 years ago. I don't like that music, it hurts my ears. Today's music is not as good as when as when I was young. I only like generic corporate driven modern rock and "metal". There is great metal out today, dare I say some of the best ever. One of the only genres pushing forward. It is not on the local radio, or being pushed in generic rock magazines. The 80's are over, it is 2010. Go really listen to some music that is out. Metal is more alive today than it ever has been. I play in metal Bands, go to metal shows, and STILL own the pit. Metal is an attitude, metal shows are still the most fun thing I could possibly do. Metal is life.

The same-thing that is wrong with all music from all the eras .... most of it is crap. It has always been that way.
