i get old school fans, who only like the 80's era, but i'm surprised at all the black album hate sometimes.

I love the Black Album and probably one of the best recorded hard rock/metal albums of all time. Awesome songs too. With that said, when I first heard the album, it was like someone slowed down one of their past albums to half speed or slower. LOL. It was just a shock to the system, especially after AJFA.

"Holier Than Thou" is one of the most underrated Metallica songs in my opinion. I remember in a Metallica documentary about the album, Bob Rock was telling them that he wanted that to be the first single. "Sad But True" still to this day just slays and sounds so heavy.

Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Takes me back to when they were great!

Agreed bro!

Big Mick has been Metallica's FOH soundman ever since '85, he seems to take his job pretty seriously and if anyone knows how to make Metallica sound good live, it's him. I'm not sure if it's this video or not, but he was raving about the Fractal's in one of his interviews.

He must be pretty old by now and our hearing doesn’t improve like a fine wine. Respect for all he’s achieved and many years of providing great sound but nothing beats passing time. If enough people have been disappointed by what they heard the duck is walking and quacking if you get my drift.

I'm sure James would be first in line to agree about that video. He really seems to regret a lot of what he did in the 90s.

He should regret everything he did after AJFA. ;)

That was a killer performance of a classic - they can still jam

i really gotta know what you guys are smoking that think thats a good performance? im as a big a metallica fan as anyone but this is laughably bad and its not the axefx's fault

I hate everything about these guys now. They bore me. So much I can't even listen to anything live for more than a few minutes. I thought Lars was terrible here and Kirk sucked as usual. It just isn't tight anymore except for James. I think the stage is way too big and looks empty, I much prefer an old school back drop and them facing out. Oh, for the record, I thought the Black album was different, but it was really good. Had a great heavy groove to it. Everything else though.... meh.

I think Kirk does great on this and compared to many previous performances I’ve seen over the years this is a good one. Lars is Lars and even though he’s never been great at fills he’s rock steady on the beat and the whole thing flows well. I don’t know what you guys would consider a great performance from them at this stage. The tone was even good, considering how lack luster there tone has been for the older stuff usually. I dig it and I’m a big post AJFA detractor. From some of the recent live clips I’ve seen they’ve rediscovered something. It’s not amazing but it sure is a hell of a lot better than what they’ve been.

I'm admittedly a Metallica fanboy and have been since 85'. Metallica is nowhere close to where they were in their heyday, but like I have said before, I think they are doing a pretty good job considering they are nearing their 60s. To be on a huge tour and have to play the same songs night after night, they are doing great.

A great performance from them would be having Dave Lombardo play all the drums for starters!

devils advocate here...they change the setlist up every single night, and they only play a few nights a week when they tour the states. check the tour dates....they don't put themselves through those black album style tours anymore.
i still think they're great. they set the bar so high for themselves with those first 5 albums, no one is ever going to be happy with anything they ever do ever again :D

My thoughts exactly. I thought it was a quite dismal.

I am a pre black bum person here too. Everything after that may as well be a different band as far as I am concerned.

As much as I would like that to be true I found the videos of when Dave and Joey Jordinson? filled in sounded off. It truly was an example of the whole being greater than the sum of it’s parts. The way Lars plays is a huge part of that bands sound. When he’s on it, it’s all good. It’s just there’s been so many years of him not even being close. I watch the Seattle 89 vid and he is fantastic but also his drum tone is at it’s peak too.

That is something I’m not digging now is the obvious snare “enhancement” he’s using. Sounds like a drum machine and not a dynamic snare drum.

One thing I find interesting. Guys say they're a pre-black album person and hate everything after that. So common. You never read a guy being post-back album and hating everything that came before it. One way street there.

Thought this performance was ok. I agree that the stage feels too big, but when you play in front of 70k people (which were all have experience doing) I'm not sure what the alternative is.
