I think the Black album was awesome (so does MILLIONS of other people) and think LOAD was decent and ReLOAD was ok. Can't say they are better or worse then the older stuff. Just different. I didn't care for St. Anger and haven't even listened to Death Magnetic

Dude, if you don't think that Load and Re-load are definitely worse you need to turn in your metal card...immediately….

I can thank the Black Album for getting me into AJFA. I passed on AFJA after a few listens but after the Black album came out, it was so damn dull accept for Sad But True and The Unforgiven that I went and re-visited AJFA. Granted after listening to it for a while it fell by the wayside. Has a few standouts but as a whole I find it fatiguing.

I find Sad But True and The Unforgiven probably the most boring on the album. I prefer Struggle Within and God That Failed. Funny that you liked the radio friendly singles and not the deeper songs

It's all good...I actually dig the lyrics and arrangement on Unforgiven a lot. I think there's an over all lack of dynamics in the material on that album which is why it bores me so much. Everything's mid tempo and fairly straight forward. Sonically, it was a step up from AJFA for sure but that's about all.

You have it so backwards. We liked them when they were cool. Fans of the 80's era never wanted Metallica to not become huge. It was inevitable. The band took a turn artistically in a direction we hated and never came back. It has nothing to do with them being successful financially. I'm glad they made it that way. They worked hard for it. But I'm entitled to my opinion that they shit the bed musically and are the palest reflection of what they once were and could have been.

I really feel sorry for people who couldn't experience those albums as they came out brand new. It was mind blowing. Especially as they got better with each one. Maybe because of that I'm time stamped with that feeling tied to that music. 80's Metallica was my first experience feeling a part of a Metal/Musical Tribe. When you met someone who was also loving KEA or RTL, you had found a brother. Remember, there was no internet. It was pure word of mouth and the occasional magazine.

I can understand if someone's first dip in the pool was the Black Album that that is what forms them as a Metallica fan. Not one of those Brothers I met in the 80's dug it much but they were still an amazing live beast. Seeing the premier video of Until It Sleeps on MTV was the ultimate nail in the coffin.

They have like 2 of every amp ever made! It must be really nice being as rich as they are??

I like the Black Album too. It's got some great songs and really amazing production quality to it... that's the perfect drum tone ever. Sandman, Roam, Sad But True, Of Wolf And Man and Unforgiven... those are all good songs, just a more stripped down, simplified Metallica.

St. Anus and on was a disaster. Death Magnetic mix was crushed before it hit the mastering house. WTF? Actually didn't mind some Load/Reload tunes.

They ARE metallica. Even if they put out a collection of 10 shitty songs the 11th is bound to have something great. A riff, a verse an intro whatever. Fanboi aside it's always interesting to hear what they do.

I am not trying to be a d***, but that is a pretty low standard to go by.That right there is the nail in there coffin for me when it come to this band. Not your personal opinion but your statement sums up why I stopped following metallica years ago. When you listen to everything before load, you found a riff, verse or intro that maybe sucked. Now its the complete opposite, they only have a hook, verse or riff that is cool. Load, reload, garage inc., was a lot of cool material and good covers, but there was still a standard they held themselves too. Sonically those album sounded good. Maybe there was a few cuts here and there that were not all the good, but it still had some legs to stand on.
My standard is a complete album. I do not play any compilations, playlist or mixes in my car. Its a full album or nothing. Even at home I am the same way. Metallica just doesn't have that standard no more. I totally understand why you are still interested in what they do, but for me it is a waste of time to be honest. There are so many bands out there making great music right now. There is no need to settle on some run of the mill album by a once great band. There was a time when I couldn't wait for progress reports on albums, now there is so much music out there that is kick ass. There is no time to waste on albums that sound like complete garbage, and lets be real about it, there last two albums sound horrible. Ear fatigue kicks in after 2 songs.
Its one thing to be a die hard fan, but lets be real about it. It is what it is.

Honestly, I kinda stopped listening to them when Justice came out. I got into the Black album a little but I was done at that point and that was like 25 years ago. I'm 45 so I was listening to Kill Em All, RTL, and MOP in high school. I hated and still hate the production on Justice but they were still the same band. After that, they really changed.....for the worse. In the early 90's they saw huge commercial success but in the metal community Pantera passed them like they were standing still.

They themselves said that they were trying to create a new album for their catalog and used AC/DCs "Back In Black" as the framework. So, in the early days, they were trying to be an American version of Diamond Head/Motörhead/Saxon, and when the 90s hit, the Black Album was their shift to more of a hard rock format.

From the outside looking in, it seems like they took the "blues rock" structure of AC/DC and tried to add more "feeling" to what they acheived on TBA, and the product of that was Load and Reload. I guess when they started selling gazillions of records, that was the validation they needed that told them they were on the right path. Keep in mind, that was from a time when there was no internet, and the only opinions you were able to get from fans that followed you were when you demoed songs live.

I grew up with their thrash albums, and it really defined me as a music fan and as a musician since its songs from this era (along with AIC) that I learned how to play guitar from, so I will always be fond of their work.

I think DM was a huge step in the right direction, but it seemed like a band trying to use a tried-and-true formula from their early years to write a record. It seemed to be missing the "heart" and pissed-offness of the originals. I'm skeptical of what their next album will sound like because they would have to be really, really passionate to write something that competes with MOP or AJFA, and I kinda doubt they have the fire to do it. I think of DM as a "cerebral" Metallica record, and I think it was written in the same headspace as AJFA, but it needs the fire and the rebelliousness that RTL and MOP had. I think with the current opinions of Metallica fans, they have plenty to want to prove.

But, this waiting 6 years between records, is complete bullshit. To me, it's the tell-tale sign of a band that is out of ideas, a band that is doubting itself, a band that is trying to reverse engineer their previous successes. You can put Tool in that same category as far as I'm concerned. It's a guarantee that there will always be an excuse, but if a band has "so much material that's written", there should be a much smaller gap between albums, and with these two bands (that are near and dear to me), it's a dark shadow over their next efforts.

Couldn't agree more. Thrash is more of an angry and hungry head space. By the black album, they were more content...much less need to prove themselves. Plus, who here thinks Lars could pull off Dyers eve, or ANYTHING like that?

They probably have a Gorilla amp too somewhere Those guys have tonz of gear. I would do the same in their place, if there is something out, I'm interested, let's try it out, most probably for free. If it's good it stays around.
My bet would be, that they will keep using the AxeFx setups for live gigs. That's just such a no brainer for touring acts this big.

Chill out dudez on this "When was Metallica a real metal band", "Kirk sucks", "Lars sucks", "Jamez sucks" and "My toe hurts". They do what they do, that's their band, they do as they please. You can have an opinion, but as everybody knows they have a well known correlation to asshole$. Don't like it, listen something else. Go out and make music you would like to hear. That's how they started too. There is so much in this world beyond your mom's basement

To be honest, I am not even sure if I would consider DM to be original music. It is a hodgepodge of every riff and song and lead break they had already written on every album up to In Justice. Yet, people call malmsteen repetitive....
