That concert actually sounded pretty good. I respect Metallica for trying new things back then but "Load" is the one album that gives me PTSD. I think it was just too much audibly and visually that changed and I couldn't handle it.

I actually love Hero of the Day now and even some other songs like "2x4" or "Until It Sleeps" but just wasn't the tighter riffs and tone i had grown to love. I didnt like that looser, bluesy tone. I think they just got burned out with that polished Black Album tone. It is the sams reason they did the Black Album after "...and Justice".

I thought it was interesting that on Garage Days (90’s one), they got much better tones than on Load and Reload.

I agree. My theory is that because it was a covers record, and not a Metallica™ music album perhaps they were open to trusting Bob as the pro producer he is to control more of the amp and tone selection on the album. It paid off I think in the variety of great tones and made it less one dimensional in guitar tone than say on St Anger, but hey thats what they were going for on that album. Ugly and Aggressive was the mission statement.
The tone they got for tracks "Mercyful Fate" and "It's Electric" are fantastic.
