So, on my way up to Maine, I was able to take a quick detour to Mike’s Guitar Loft in beautiful New Hampshire.
Do yourself a favor and make the trip if you are in the area.
Mark is the nicest dude in the world and was more than happy to explain to me his lineup and the design philosophy of his amps.
I got a chance of trying out a 100 watt 2 channel Red circuit amp and it f-ing rips!
Clips don’t do these amps justice. Yes, the clips sound great, but you don’t get a sense of the feel and thump. I’d say they have the immediacy and thump of a Fryette or Splawn, but without the dryness of the former and without the (imo) weird eq of the latter. With the switches and options, it reminded me of my JVM 410H but with the tone purity of a JCM 800.
Also, the master volume is probably the best I have heard. Mark and I were carrying a conversation and I was still getting epic tones.
In short, I see an MGL red circuit in my future. If you are thinking about one of these amps, just do it.
Lastly, Mark has the best pup. She greets you as soon as you come in and she’s very tolerant of clams and general bad playing
