To the OP, the optimum mic placement for you is up your ass. Please use a studio quality condenser with built in USB interface, connected to your PC running the appropriate translation software. You're an IT guy, you'll figure out how to run phantom power without electrocuting yourself. This way you can download your thoughts directly to Rigtalk without the cumbersome burden of typing. Now, and I cannot stress this enough, it is vitally important for you to remove your head from your own ass, BEFORE shoving the mic all the way up in there. Otherwise, you may get phasing issues.
