Mic preamp suggestions for around $500 for recording guitar?

It depends a lot on what you are recording (guitar cabs, acoustic guitars, heavy vs. clean stuff). And also what mics do you have? Mono or stereo recording? Hard to recommend a pre without knowing more about what and how you record.

cool, thanks for asking! I'm using a 1987 type head with a 4x12 with Greenbacks. I use a Tubescreamer up front, the tones are probably considered more hard rock (no 7 string, no chugga, chugga). I have an SM57 (very old one) and a Heil PR20. I just use 1 mic. I thought about using 2, but I was worried about the phase cancellation and stuff like that - I use just 1 mic on the cab to be safe.

My $80.00 Audiobuddy and $1300+ Vintech Dual 72 sound just about identical. I'm far from professional, but I've read about similar realizations.... :dunno:

That said....I'd still like to try an API pre. Maybe I'll intoxicate myself and buy a Lunchbox loaded with goodies. :)
