Looks like Mike Fortin is officially back to modding as we all know his contract with Randall has ended!!! So those who want the Jose, KK++, or Gainmonster mods and do not want to send an amp across the pond to Dan can do so!!! Mods and prices on his website!!!!!

http://www.fortinamps.com/amp-heads/modifications/

Some of these prices are really high. $250 to replace 6 filter caps in a 2203 is $75 in parts and $175 in labor. Bench rate at that point seems about $200 an hour. Almost seems priced like he doesn't want to do that kind of work.

Mods that cost more than most of the amps being modded? Those prices are just silly. I played an original Kali next to my Chupacabra and the ceriatone sounded better.

The Cali circuit has undergone recent revisions that put it head and shoulders above the previous design.

The prices are definitely more than I'd spend. But he can price them how ever he wants. No one is forced to get him to mod an amp. Personally I'd probably go with Voodoo Amps.

His prices may be a little high, but his mods are killer!!! I have a Gower KK++ mod which is pretty much the same mod design as Fortin's KK++ and the amp is awesome!!! I am sure he is not going to have a lack of business.

I just sent Mike a JCM800 for a KK++ mod. Can't wait to get it back!

...or any work at all.

So the base amp needs to be.... 800? Plexi? How does that work?

Yep... 800, Plexi... from the amps he prefers, you outsource and buy the amp. Then send it to him for 'said' mods you want. You pay shipping to and fro.

You have to think about the fact that he doesn't just add mods to the existing board, etc. He rebuilds the entire amp if I am not mistaken. I do agree some of the add on stuff is a little drastic in cost.

He can charge what the market will bear. Nobody is forcing you to send him your amp or your money.

His contract with Randall ended a lot sooner than I thought it would. I have no knowledge of the contract, obviously, but didn't Bruce stay with Randall for 10 years?

I'd be interested to know what 'rebuild' means. That could mean replace every component on the board because of mod choices or it could mean completely gut the amp and start from scratch. If he's completely rebuilding the board and wiring it becomes kind of silly to send him an amp to 'mod.' Just send him a chassis with transformers and hardware installed which would cost $500 instead of the $1000+ a typical used 800 of any age or model costs.

Wonder who's desicion it was to split? Fortin or Randall? Randall hasn't made a good desicion since Don Randall. They're always too little too late. $1200 solid state amps, horrible reliability, and just plain blah sounding amps have been their business model since US music took over.
