I say grab the drummer from Porcupine Tree and go back to their roots and less metal. Personally, they should have just taken a 3 year hiatus. Either way, I won't lose any sleep.
Gavin Harrison would be a nice fit, but I'm not sure why he'd want to leave Porcupine Tree for DT.

Got darn I wish James The Cheese would leave and they got a good singist in,,,,

HOPEFULLY this will influence Labrie to leave as well and they can get a better singer.

I agree. I said that with the hopes that he would rub off on the remaining guys. The more I think about this the better I think it is. I would really like to see them challenge themselves and try to go in a different direction. I hope Roadrunner Records doesn't require them to write a metal record.

Who listens to Dream Theater and pays attention to the vocals?

It's really a shame about Mike Portnoy leaving, because he's not just a drummer in a band, he's a large factor in songwriting. Dream Theater isn't going to be able to just grab any skilled drummer and continue creating the same music they have been. It would be great to seem them journey in another direction though, perhaps something heavier and more technical like the older albums, or maybe even something lighten and more prog towards the Porcupine Tree side of the spectrum. I'm going to be all ears about anything from here on out, but it's certainly disheartening that Mike Portnoy would enjoy playing in bands like Avenged Sevenfold over Dream Theater, but I can understand where he's coming from.

i wonder if he is going to stay the drummer in Avenged Sevenfold ?? i know he is on tour with them right now. going to see them this saturday actually....

while i am not a fan of dream theatre from a listening point of view, they are an awesome band, and i hate to see bands of this magnitude break up.

I doubt it. I take it he wants to get off of the road, and work on multiple projects in the studio.

I am shocked. If he joins AX7 full time then I am jumping out a window. Sure, it may be a first floor window, but I am still jumping.

Richard C would be cool. So would Dave Lombardo, which will never happen, but it would be fun to hear. Who knows, maybe this will open up the playbook and they can get back to what they should be.

worst person with a microphone I ever saw at a show- the guy can jam, but then he opens his mouth and pompous arrogance flows

I hope he tours with JBieber

i hope john petrucci puts out another solo album. Suspended animation was the shit.

I'm not surprised. They've been going constantly for so long now.

I too wish they brought back Sherinian or Moore. I think they both have more style and personality in their playing than Rudess.

Portnoy makes me cringe with every word he says in every interview. His "goodbye" letter is no exception.

As a big dream theater fan for masny years, I think he is right, they need a break, all of them.

They are a great band which I admire, but honestly, their 2 last albums have completely failed me.

If you're looking on all the albums that they did before systematic chaos, you'll realize that each album had a based idea behind it and a somewhat concept, each album had it's own sound and charcter, each album brought the same band with similar writing but on abit different context,
which to me, is the greatest way to create many successfull interesting albums - to maintain
the elements that defines you as an artist but at the same time to bring new elements that will give your creation another context, kind of like revisionning yourself.

They did this till systematic chaos and it's follow up - black clouds.

Both of these albums had no direction, the songs didnt feel like a one piece creation,
they didnt feel related one to the other, they could be on any other dream theater album,
and the riffs\structure\atmosphere on the new songs, to me, didnt come close to what was going on in previous album, it really lacked inspiration, it really sounded almost like they are forcing themselves to write another album and than another one, and well after 25 years og doing that, it's pretty much natural, that's everything they did in all those years, it's hard to suddenly break that sequence.

I think they should have agreed to take a break for some period and than come abit more inspired to writing, maybe the whole break from my mike portnoy would give them a new inspiration, but personally I feel they have completely lost it and I doubt the next album will be any better than the last ones.

+1 to everything written here

I just read what he said, sounds like he wants the band to stop playing because he needs a break,so I guess nobody can eat unless? Can't stand his ego. And it all sounds like me me me,I did this,I did that. It's not a one man band!

The more I think about it (which isn't much), sounds like Mike is having a mid-life crisis.

I read what he wrote also, and didn't get that at all. Why do they have to stop playing? They can continue to play in any number of side projects. I mean how many side projects has Petrucci had? Portnoy asked for like a year off. It seems pretty reasonable. Many bands do exactly what he said in during breaks. Seems kind of weird that they would just go on without him if you ask me, unless what he said is not true. He just asked that they put DT on hold...a band that they are ALL a part of together, and one he founded. In fact, his lack of ego was what allowed him to walk away so that they COULD continue on as DT without him and he could do other things, instead of say pulling an AXL or Densmore, or whoever and suing over the name and right.

I truely agree with this, this could be a very healthy break for them too.

I just checked the Dream Theater website and found this on the opening page:

"To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness -- regret -- we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike's stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.

While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other ventures and challenges, we can assure you that Dream Theater will continue to move forward with the same intensity -- and in the same musical tradition -- that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us.

Fans and friends: File this episode under "Black Clouds and Silver Linings." As planned, we begin recording our newest album in January 2011, and we'll follow that with a full-on world tour. "The Spirit Carries On."

All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey. We have had a long and meaningful career together. It is our true hope that he finds all he is looking for, and that he achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be missed."
