I don't see whats wrong with Mike Portnoy writing songs about something that meant a lot to him.

mike probly started seeing what its like being a part of a big mainstream band and all the fun that comes out of it. Not that dream theatre isn't a big well known band but theres a bigger and younger crowd out there for bands like A7X. Only playing music that is simple and catchy rather than insanely technical.

This might be a good thing. I like all their albums, but the newer ones aren't as strong as the ealier ones.

I think they should get Mark Zonder (ex Fates Warning)

Gavin from PT would be an excellent choice. I think this is going to end up being a good thing from DT. Perhaps they can tune the guitars back to standard and get back to writing good music. Maybe we can convince John P to worry more about song writing than weight lifting.

Martin Lopez, former Opeth drummer would be a cool fit as well.

They should get David Charlesworth from the band Dead Air Radio. I used to play with that guy and he is every bit a good as Portnoy..

I don't know. It does seem a little arrogant to me. He doesn't miss an opportunity to remind everyone how much work he did for DT. It's true I know but it never comes off well when you pat yourself on the back. But to ask the other 4 guys to put DT on hold while he scratches an itch, is selfish in my opinion. Yeah, the other guys can play on other projects while MP takes care of himself, but why should they have to? He asked, and they said "No". I think they should be commended for splitting this cleanly. I'm a fan of MP's and will miss him in the band. Yeah, he seems a bit "confident" but you have to admire his talent and ambition. He is a huge factor in the development and longevity of Dream Theater.

That said, do I think MP has played his last beat with DT? No. I'm sure he'll be back for a tour/album or whatever. He knows die-hard DT fans will "buy the shit" out of that CD. That's just good business.

And for the record, I dig Labrie's voice and love JR on keys. To me, they are the "real" keyboardist and vocalist of this band.

Peace.

Dave

Of course there are other drummers who will be able to play his parts, but imagine what a monumental undertaking it'll be to learn so much intricate material ? Especially considering how long & varied their set lists are ?

Personally I think they're finished because the song writing hasn't been good for 10 years now. Portnoy wrote lyrics and I'm sure did arranging but doesn't Petrucci write the vast majority of the stuff ?

It would be cool if he formed a new group with either one of the past DT keyboard players, & with an all new lineup, then blow DT away !

I believe Petrucci writes most of the music, but Portnoy and Myung are heavy contributors.
