Miking an VH4 using a 4x12 cab

Dear all,

I am having trouble getting good recordings with my amp (VH4 through a 4x12 rearloaded amp).
I am using an Sennheiser e906. Results so for: clean sound is too compressed, overdrive sound is too thin.

Can you give some advise on
- placement of the mike: distance to grill cloth and placement wrt. center of speaker cone?
- volume of amp: rather quite, normal , loud????

Hello Jan,

I successfully use an SM57 to mic Diezel Amps for recording jobs. I place the mic in the dead center of 1 speaker, touching the grill and 100% perpendicular. This set up produces for me the best tone with all the Diezel models and cabs.
The volume your amp is set on als plays an important role. You need to crank it to the point where you get nice staturation and "balls" from the power tubes. In my opinion, there is no use to record with the amp set a bedroom level.

Okay..now on Topic:

I´m going to record a few Songs and I wonder what would be a good Microphone-Postion for my Einstein. I´m going to record with a Mesa 212 Vertical with V30.

A friend borrowed the Einstein for a Reamping-Session. But he wasn´t pleased at all. He recorded the Megamode with a Mesa Boogie Recto 412 OS Angled. He said it like that: too much Bass, even with Bass and Deep down. And on one point all the Sound looses Balls. Either too thin (Highs and Mids on 13 at least, Presence at 13) or too thick. They´ve been using a Sm57 and another "worthy" one..(don´t know the name).

What could have caused the problem? I usually play Gigs with the Einstein and most times I haven´t got problems at all. Okay...most times the other guitar players have problems to be heard by the audience, even we have checked Volume-Level before.
But in fact it´s very easy to achieve a very well Live Sound in at least 2-3 minutes...
 
Generally in recording everything affects everything so micplacement and even ampsettings are still just parts of the equation.
The room itself and placement in it can make a huge difference as well as the guitar, playingstyle, cables, strings, micamp/signalchain etc.
I like to get the sound right at the source if possible and also envision it in the whole production or atleast in some kind of roughmix to be sure there is room for all the other elements in the song.

Experimenting is key. Moving the mic just a little to the side can make a big difference in sound. Right up against the speakercone usually gives more treble than, say at a 45 degree angle which rounds the edge off a little. A popular method is to use two SM57´s to achieve both sounds. Just watch out for phasecancellation (but that´s a whole other can of worms). Good luck!
 
My suggestion is to use a g12k100 speaker with your 906 for distorted sounds. I put my 906 about an 1-2 inches from the grill pointed at the edge of the dust cap perpendicular. I use the same placement on vintage 30s for clean/crunch. I dial the amp in way differently than I would in the room. You're usually going to want way less bass and extra treble/presence. I find it REALLY helps to put the cab and mic in a different room and keep the head in your 'control' room to dial the sound in. If you can't hear your cab at all in the control room that's the best scenario... Yes crank the amp to a decent level. I have had little luck with sm57 mics.
