I have a soul food, love it in front of the amp, very very gritty on a clean channel, tightens things up, not smooth overdrive though, for that I use a MXR classic overdrive, sonically great pedal though!
The Soul Food seems like a pretty legit Klon copy, especially for the price. For a "pleasing" gritty, I'd say try an OCD. They don't have a lot mids and the high end can get a little rough and obnoxious. Great feeling pedal to play through. I traded mine but sort of want another one.

I bought the soul food and later in the week, I got the EHX Lumberjack as well. I almomst bought a Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive, but ended up doing the EHX thing to save a little cash.
The Soul food can be used 2 ways. 1) it can be used as a clean boost. 2) it can fatten up a clean or dirty channel, but it doesn't sound fat, per' se. It just adds a touch of warm OD. I've used it with my VHT and 5153. Ob the VHT, it sounds great clean and warms up the clean channel just enough, without compressing the signal. On the EVH, I use it on channel 2, and it warms up channel 2 and almost makes it into a fat sounding marshall.
The Lumberjack is a weird and unique pedal. To my ears, it splits a signal. Half the signal is dirty and the other half is clean. The dirty tone is in the background and the clean tone is up front. I like this because it adds a touch of hair to a clean channel without really distorting its tone. I think of it a very subtle fuzz. Its almost reminiscent of an old 1960's sort of sound. It sounds kinda' like Grand funk railroad in a way. very cool and unique, but not for everyone. I tried it out at a store through a Bugera V22, and I was taken back. The bugera actually sounded good, but the Lumberjack totally made it sound great.
