Oh yeah. Here is the review I wrote for Harmony Central, but I'm not sure if it ever got posted with all the changes going on over there. I'll be posting it again once that site is settled...
Features
It's a wooden box with speakers. They're all the same right? WRONG!! If the military were taking speaker cabinets into combat, they be taking a MILLS. These cabs are built like a tank and are made to meet the demands of touring professionals - not to mention uncompromising basement rock stars like me.
Key features include:
- 13 ply, 3/4 inch Russian birch plywood
- Steel-reinforced internal corners
- Heavy duty steel corner protectors and recessed handles
- Revolutionary internal "Afterburner" baffle that reduces phasing distortion and enhances projection
- Rear-mounted speakers, bolted in place using aircraft-grade machine bolts with nuts and lock washers
- MILLS doesn't solder the speaker wire to the terminals but uses custom-fit connector terminals - making it easier to change speakers out if you like experiment.
MILLS builds cabs to your custom specifications. My particular cabs are all black with no piping, 8 ohm mono and have Celestion Vintage 30s and Celestion GK-100s wired in an X-pattern.
Sound Quality
A little background first. Before I bought my first 2 MILLS cabs, I owned 2 Bogner Ubercabs and a rear-loaded Diezel 412 cab. The Bogner Ubercab was my be-all, end-all cab. Nothing could touch it in my mind. One day, I found out a friend of mine had a MILLS Afterburner 412B. I didn't know much about MILLS at the time, but after talking to him and doing a little research on the internet, I was very interested. He let me borrow it so I could compare it side by side with my cabs, using my amps (which at the time were a Diezel Herbert, Diezel VH4 and a VHT Ultra-Lead). Within a month, I sold my Bogner and Diezel cabs and had 2 brand new
MILLS Acoustics Afterburner 412B cabs.
Why would I sell my, what some may argue to be the best cabs on the market, in favor of MILLS? Quite simply, it really took playing the Diezel/Bogner cabs together to get the thickness/girth that the MILLS cab had by itself.
The MILLS delivered a huge, thick/ full, three-dimensional that my other cabs lacked. I never knew a cab could sound as big. I owned an over-sized Mesa Recto cab before and it couldn't handle the low-end pounding my amps can dish out. It would distort and be muddy and fart out. The MILLS delivers the low-end while keeping things tight, punchy and clear.
Another thing that impressed me with the MILLS cab that I tried was the fact that the sound was spread evenly. Most all v30 cabs I've tried sounded sound harsh from the upper-mid beam coming right at you if you stand right in front of it. Ted Weber probably made a fortune selling "beam-blockers." No need for those with a MILLS cab.
Reliability
See the features section above. This cab is over-built to withstand anything you can throw at it. Everything in the design and finish of the cab is top-notch.
Customer Support
There aren't many companies out there that treat their customers like family. MILLS is one of the rare few. They genuinely want you to be happy with every aspect of your purchase and will do what it takes to make it right if you have a problem.
MILLS offers a Satisfaction Guarantee that no other cabinet manufacturer dares to offer. They give you 30 days to return the cab if you aren't completely satisfied and you get a 100% refund even the shipping costs. My understanding is that very few, if any, have taken them up on that offer. I'm not surprised.
Overall Rating
What more needs to be said. Why buy a cabinet from an amp maker - when you can buy a cabinet built by a cabinet maker? The primary focus at MILLS is to built the best possible speaker cabinet available, not just something out-sourced to supplement amp sales. The best part is that you'll get a better cab, structurally and tonally, and pay less. The cab is suitable for all styles of music.
Dave Mills has confidence in his product. He's willing to put his cab up against any other manufacturers cab and let the listener be the judge. Not many manufacturers will take the time to talk to you about what you are looking for in a speaker cabinet like Dave will.
I realize this is just another glowing review in a string of glowing reviews. I put my money where my mouth is. I recently made the mistake of trading one of my two MILLS cabs in favor of another cab because I thought it would pair better with one of my amps. After the initial euphoria of having a matching head and cab wore off, I realized that I cared more about the sound than I did about the looks. So that new cab got sold and I ordered myself another MILLS Afterburner yesterday.
