Best bet? Go for a Mills cab done or install Scumback speakers into my Vintage Marshall cab? Scum alternative would be cheaper.

Last of all.... I have a 4X12. Shoul I just skip down to a 2X12? Clubs and recording 4X12 I am thinking is overkill since cab is miced anyway. It looks but.... really needed?

Why not an loaded Mills then adding the Scumbacks? This is what I'm contemplating right now.

For what it is worth, I am rebuilding two older Marshall cabs back to late '60's spec (thanks Jim!). I figure with the additional bracing and then sealing of cab, it should sound about as good as it can.

I say go for the Scumbacks in the Marshall. You can always buy an unloaded Mills cab later if you want.

4x12/2x12/1x12 sound VASTLY different under a microphone. 4x12's are my favorite.

Also, Mills cabs are the bomb, do it!

There is no additional bracing or sealing on my 60`s marshall cabs? they are built just like a jcm 800 minus metal handles and old wood and old everything/ basketweave/ prerola`s

i am having the cab dillema also, 4x12s all the way, lookin at almighty cabs, stoneage cabs and mills cabs. it would be nice to play all three next to one another, but it aint happening, the almighty cabs are built well, 3/4 inch 13 baltic birch, and are dressed road ready, with your choice of speakers, got a price of 593$ from jim..... mills and stoneage are both up near 1200ish, but you know!

one thing going for the Mills, they have a satisfaction guarantee. If you don't think the cab is everything they claim it to be, you have 30 days to return it for a full 100% refund. I don't see many/any other cab makers, or companies in general for that matter, offerring something like that on a product.

I was referring to the corners being double thickness on the speaker baffle, and the center baffle (on slant cabs) running the full length top to bottom.

Other than that, not much different than any other birch Marshall.

The sealing is just something that should be done on any cab, not anything to do with Marshall.

I didn't know this. Interesting. Thing is though the cost of shipping that thing back would have to be supa expensive.

Picking speakers and cabinets ... and finding a good match is tough. I have the 100 watt Scumback M75 and am currently using it in an open back 1x12 for SC neck PU tones. It's great for this, but I didn't care for it for neck humbucker tones. I just think it's too dark. I really like the Scumback H75 LHDC HP, I have two of them in a Mojo oversized sealed 2x12. The OS sealed 2x12s extend the bass and highs more than a marshall 4x12, but the mids aren't as thick. Works great with the H Scumbacks (both humbuckers and SC), I thought the M Scumback had too much bass and highs in this cab. So ... an OS 2x12 with those H Scumbacks is my recommendation. Very crunchy, great for high gain, can be EQed for more classic tones, and the H75 LHDC HPs are voiced in the ball park of the Celestion greenback RIs, which is a great speaker but too low powered for many applications. Hope that helps.

I recall Dave saying that they refund return shipping. I could be wrong.

Regardless, you won't send it back, trust me. ;)

yeah, shipping is expensive for something that size and weight. I'm not sure if it's still in effect because I didn't see it on the site, but when I ordered my cab, there was a 7 day return policy where he refunded the shipping costs too. Crazy good deal.

If you do the Mills, let me know how the scummy's sound in that.

I kinda like my Mills as is.....

I think you'll love the MILLS.
I have a Mach 2x12 and it kills!

I've run various 4x12s for years, and I've replaced it with this BEEFY 2x12!

I've heard great things about the Scumbacks...supposedly they sound waaay better than the Chinese Celestion Greenback reissue.. toying with the idea of trying some myself...

Not as expensive as buying a piece of gear with no return policy. There are cabs being pushed on this forum that have no published satisfaction guarantee of any kind. You have to ask and then begrudgingly they agree (in some cases) to take it back as long as you pay shipping BOTH ways. I've emailed them and PM'ed them directly to ask their policy and they just don't seem to want to give an answer. Several others have told me they ran into the same response, or rather, lack of response in trying to avoid pissing away $1800.

We at least refund the shipping you paid in addition to the purchase cost. Also, to address another aspect...we used to offer to pay RETURN freight as well since we were pretty sure none would be coming back based on lack of satisfaction. And none came back, until one in particular. We sold a 412B to a client and he received the cab. We got a phone call, and emails telling us how much he loved what the cab did to his rig. 29 days after he received it, he called up to inform us that he was going to return it and that we had offered to pay all freight, which we had at the time. "What was the problem?" I asked. "no problem" he said. "I'm just not ready to buy it for another 3 months but I appreciate the FREE demo". !!!! Well, at least he was honest and rather than send back a cab he wanted and waste $250 in 2 separate freight trips, we ended up financing the damn thing.

So the moral of the story is that good intentions and a desire to provide the best in service and product, has it's limitations. There's only so much we can do. But I will say this, IF someone buys our product and truly is unhappy with it, we will be inclined to do all possible to make sure no one loses a nickel on a MILLS cab. All hi-end Builders should feel the same as far as we're concerned. But apparently some don't.

Any chance on sending some to Tone Merchants to try. i really wanna try the 2x12s and an Afterburner with the Black Labels with the Wizard, Marsha and SLO. :)

Its hard to beat a deal like that, finding a cab maker willing to pay return shipping and a guarantee.

Classic example of one asshole ruining it for everyone else.

Kudos to Mills for such great customer service.
