I am working on a guitar project and would like to make a guitar with a mirror or chrome finish. A couple examples would be Joe Satriani or Matt Bellamy of Muse. Any of you know a good way of going about doing this?

Thanks!

I think you can kinda bend mirror acrylic with heat, so you can get it around a forearm contour.

I'm interested in playing with the chrome vinyl that they wrap cars with. It looks pretty good on the cars. Should generally work on a guitar body too.

I remember an article in Guitar World about Joe Satriani talking about that Chrome Ibanez (silver surfer?), and he said that the finish started flaking off really bad and he said he wasn't using that guitar anymore. But, that was about 10 years ago. I don't know if paint technology has improved to where chrome paint is reliable now, but I've seen many cars wrapped in chrome wraps, and they look pretty good!

Mick Mars had a Tele with a mirror top, Paul Stanley has had several cracked mirror guitars over the years.
Theres an article out there from the guy that built Pauls Ibanez iceman mirror guitar back in the 70's. Sounded like quite a process.

A flat top body like a Tele should be easy. Just glue a thin mirror to the top of the body...

I know a bit about Matt's guitars. The chrome finish on those were done by a company called Sims in the UK, but supposedly the quality control isn't what it used to be. However, there's a company in PA called coat of chrome, and they supposedly do a good job. He's difficult to get a hold of though.

The mirror finishes are 3mm mirror backed perspex, but if you're going for a full mirror wrap around the guitar, the sides are a bit thinner (can't remember the exact thickness). A mirror front should be fairly easy to do yourself though, but if you're going for the cracked mirror effect, it might be a bit difficult getting the pattern to look good.

i have a mlf with a cracked mirror top from kamn guitars. it's amazing. total porn star guitar...open the case in a music stop, everything stops and everybody wants to touch it. it's kinda weird, you wind up watching your pick hand in the mirror from below. cant barely feel the cracks. if you want a cracked mirror job, he's the guy. I love that guitar.

spectrachrome I believe is the chrome paint. kinda sucked 4 years ago when I looked into it. looked great for a bit but will scratch easy.

Great info, thanks for sharing. I got to do some research and see what route Im going to take.
