Mixing Speakers

I have an Orange 212 with British v30's. I want to sell one of them and put in a scumback greenback. Is it OK to mix two speakers with different power ratings? Will the lower watt greenback be able to keep up with the v30 in terms of volume?

I've never done this before, so I need some advice. I'll be using the cab with a transatlantic if that's any help. Thanks in advance.

V30's are 100db, my speakers are as follows:

M75-97db
H75-99db
Scumnico 98db

The lower powered models have a tiny bit less bass and more treble, while the 65w and 100w have a tiny bit more bass and a tiny bit less treble.

You can mix the lower powered speaker without issues as long as the ohm ratings are the same. If you mix 8 and 16 ohm speakers, the 8 ohm will take twice as much power as the 16 ohm, resulting in 2/3 power going to the 8 ohm, 1/3 to the 16 ohm.

Successful mixes have included the H75 and M75. The H75/V30 mix works, but the M75/V30 mix would leave the V30 more dominant in output.

Be aware of lowered cab wattage as well.
For example, a 60 watt speaker paired with a 25 watt speaker will make the cab 50 watts. (25x2)

When i play the M75/H75 mix i think the H75 has a slight edge in sounding more up front, i guess just because it's a little brighter. But overall, it's a great sounding mix. And yes, i would think the V30 would take over the sound too much when mixed with an M75 just like you said.

Ok, I've got the V30/J75 quad loaded up in the demo cab (an old Aiken/Mojo 4x12 w/Bluesbreaker reissue cloth). I've got some shipping to do, and a trip to the old condo to get some parts, then I'll be back. I'll deliver a tone/mix report around 2-3pm today (PST).

I put the V30's on the bottom for those who care.

'Once you go Scumback, you never go back.'

I would try the H75 65Watt version first with the V30. See how you like it, than you can always get an M75 down the road if the mix with the V30 is not your liking.

Curious to see Jim's results with the J75 and V30. The J75 is a 98dB sensitivity speaker.

Ok, I did the testing with my 71 Super Lead and my 100w Friedman Kitchen Sink mod amp.

Big huge low end and low mids, with a good midrange bump. It's pretty intense for tone, though, and loud, loud, loud. High end is there but isn't crushingly brutal, although you can still catch the upper mid peak of the V30's.

The cab I had it in is fine, but that stupid Marshall slide switch (4/8/16/stereo) thing is definitely crackling. When I switched over to another cab it didn't do it, so while I couldn't hear it at volume (around 6-7), it definitely did a crackling tone. I'm going to have to rewire that cab from scratch to make sure it's not the V30's.

Bottom line: The mix sounds intense, definitely 5-10% louder than the four H75's I put it up against, which I'm sure is the V30's with their higher db rating.

I occasionally run a 4x12 w/ V30s combined with a 4x12 w/ G12Ms. They mix well. Both speakers fill in the gaps left by the other speaker, so it's not like all you hear is V30 because V30s are rated louder. The V30 has it's punch and the G12M has it's crunch. You can clearly hear the G12Ms breakup through the V30, and you can clearly hear the V30's upper mids through the G12Ms mids.

I'm not sure how the two speakers would fair in a 2x12.... as in, I don't know if it'd be a smaller version of what I hear with two 4x12s? Or if it'd be a totally different vibe?
