quick pre shootout. api 512c vs chandler germanium

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just thought you all might be interested in a quick little pre amp shootout.

chandler germanium with sm57 into mod 100.
one take. so its a little sloppy. I am really digging it.

here is a quick clip of the api 512c with sm57 into mod 100
this one was two passes. one for rhythm and a quick lead.

pre amps make quite a big difference!

I got 404 file not found as well. Looking forward to hearing these though. I passed on the germanium last summer, had it in my hands and everything. Always wondered if I should have snagged it. Supposed to be great on bass. I haven't heard much feedback for it guitar wise.

I think I like the API better. It's more upfront-sounding. Less fuzzy as well.

i like the punch of the api for sure.

to be truthful i set the germ for max saturation and thick switch to get the most coloration out of it

it can clean up very well too

it is the rack version not the 500

I love how API's sound... I need to get one one day... :)

I have owned or own almost every major pre there is, moderating gearslutz.com, writing reviews and beta testing for many manufacturers has given me much experience with this. IMO nothing is better then API for guitars.

Lower left, 2 vintage 312's racked by Brent Averill. They beat out everything on guitars 95% of the time.

Sure seems that way.

They have a punch and tone that just crushes for heavies and also rock vocals and drums. I have been using them on vocals more then my vintage Neve 1073 or 1272's lately. The API's open top end is flawless sounding. I bought the last 2 vintage 312's Brent Averill had. They will go to the grave with me.

Yeah... all the API clips I've heard had this awesome punchiness to them... One of these days, I'll buy a Lunchbox and put a couple modules in there...

Wow, I'm glad I read this thread. I have one of those vintage API 312 mic pres that I got from Brent Averill about 12 years ago. I think the thing sounds killer but I always wondered if the grass is greener. It's good to read from someone with James' experience that I am just fine where I am

Do you use an attenuator and drive em'?

how do those bae 312's stack up against the current 512c's?

I had some 512's for a while and thought they were great. Here's a massive shootout I did last year, the 512 rocked. Go to post #211 for gtr files:

i think they sound pretty similiar.

do they have the same amount of massive output?

do you run an inline pad to knock down a few db after it comes out of the pre. the api likes to knock my recorder into clipping! especially with loud sources

The 512's have a slight mid push compared to the original 312and are just a touch darker. I agree with James that when it comes to guitars, nothing compares to API.
