The Chandler has some hair around it which sounds nice, but the API has a punchiness that makes me prefer it more. How does the API stack up to something like the Great River?

GR's are awesome but traditionally more neve-ish. I little quicker then a neve but probably not the spank of an API.

Agreed! The API just has that punch. I still remember the first time I tracked through an API how blown away I was. I just knew I had something magical. I wasn't as blown away with the Great River, although it is one of the best pres out there and one of my faves, but it just didn't have that smack the API had at first listen.

Btw, hey James! Fellow gearslut here! I always enjoy your posts there!

The Pacifica is a great pre, I actually have 2 pairs now but for me they are more for overs, hh, ride, keys and Pop/R&B female vocals. They don't have the snarl I like for heavies but honestly when your talking about gear at this level you're talking about a game of milla-inches. You can make great records with anything at this level, I just prefer to use API or blend mics using API/1073. Sometimes I like to put the 421 into the 1073 and the 57 in the 312. Want to talk about massive! Double the rhythm tight as a virgin, pan and watch the client lose it... :D

 You guys need to give me your addresses. I'm coming over with a gun & a truck.

I really dig the pacifica when it gets pushed really hard, it has some super cool vibe to it.

How do you get anything done with that amount of outboard next to you is beyond my imagination.

I use the same s**t everyday.

Most of the gear is specialty for certain situations and certain clients and is used rarely or when we are tracking drums and need massive outboard but my bread and butter gear is usually the same.

Rifling through a lot of gear in sessions can be a vibe killer and unprofessional.

Good point man.

ditto ... you come up with your formula's as to what works and what doesn't...I usually always go to the 1073's , royer 121 and a 57 on guitar cab...Pre production is key and will usually give you a good idea and path for your workflow...
