I tried some different power tubes in my Mod 50. The 5881WXT sounds a little bright and bland. Is this normal? I threw a pair of Sovtek EL34WXT's in my amp that I had lying around in my tube bin. They sounded a lot warmer and more musical. I play a lot of clean Tele stuff on the T/D module. What's the best sounding tube for the T/D module? I'm looking for typical BF Fender tones.

Thanks,
Billy

I have done a lot of tube swaps in my Mod 50 but I have yet to try Eric's recommendation of the TS 6550s.

I recently yanked my Ruby EL34s and installed JJE34Ls and wow, what a change! Huge, warm tone, good cleans as well. My rhythms are a little tighter too with these tubes. They are staying for a while! These may never come out, LOL!

For the record, I did not like the TS 5881s at all.

For really killer Fender tones...try the NOS Jan Philips 6L6WGB -> http://thetubestore.com/jan6l.html

I have a set of them...and they are to DIE for!! :) Expensive...yes...but awesome.

If that's too $$$ for you...try a set of TS 6550s. They are my personal all around favorite in my personal Mod50. I have yet to find a tube that makes ALL modules sound AMAZING. Well...the TS 6550 in the Mod50 just kills. I know 3-4 other guys that have the TS6550s in their Mod50 and just plain love it.

I have to give the TS6550's a try. I bought a set of GT6L6GE's and they sounded terrible in the Mod 50. I've also lost all faith in GT. The biasing was 12mA off from each tube, so much for a matched set. I'll stick with Doug's Tubes for now on.

Well that does it. I'm ordering a set of TS6550's from Doug's Tubes.

Try the JP 6L6s if you can afford them. Great for recording the Twin / DLX / XMAN sounds for me... But I use them sparingly. My TS 6550s get ABUSED in my Mod50. I love em! :)
