Have Friedman mod the master volume on your JCM 800...you won't be disappointed. I can't be any more direct than that.

stick with your first idea
Get a 09 or newer quickrod with loop master volume control
works like a charm on my 09 nitro
I can crank the master volume past 12:00 and get nice saturation and harmonics while my girlfriend is watching tv next door.
All this in a mesa 4x12 cab..

I too have a Mesa 4x12! I'm liking the idea of the Splawn with the built in attenuator, even if it kills a little bit of mojo, at least it's not a stock 800 on 1
