My son, who is 11, is beginning to show interest in Ed and his guitars. He asked me if we can build a Frankenstrat replica. I obviously don't want to spend a ton on it. I found this kit, http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1591276891.html. I just figured I'd ask here if anyone knows anything about it, or if there are better options for around that price.

I'd avoid aliexpress man ... why not get a cheap fender squire and mod it??

Squier Affinity Strat with a maple neck is cheaper than what you found at that unreliable overseas site Aliexpress

You could even browse your local Craigslist for something similar. Super easy to strip the paint then paint it the Frankenstrat way. Good luck with your project. I've built a couple myself and this might get me interested to build another one lol

Just buy a old Kramer focus 1000 and get it painted. Those are great guitars for the price. You can pcik them up in the 250-300 range. They are made in Japan come with an original floyd Rose. The pickup is slanted like a Baretta too.

That would be more like the 5150 guitar. He, and I, specifically want to do a Frankenstein.

I'd check eBay for cheap parts and put it together and paint yourself.

That's the route I'm leaning toward.

Does anyone know of any cheap/quality bodies? I'm pretty sure I'll go with a MM neck.

The more I look, I'm thinking around $400-$500 after all is said and done.

Man I love putting guitars together! If my boy wanted to build one with me, I'd slow down the process. Like hunting down each part, do what we can by hand, have him save some allowance for this or that, teach as many lessons as possible, all that good stuff.
On a gig like this, it's more about the trip than the destination.
Enjoy!!!

I've been looking at parts on rock audio and guitar fetish. Both have cheap priced bodies. Ebay is a great option too

When it comes to bodies, focus on the wood and weight. It's pretty much all CNC, so the specs are all the same. Tone will always be a crap shoot.
My favorite guitar was made with a 2 piece swamp ash I found on ebay for under 80 bucks.

try KnE guitars they do great work, and they are cheap

I've purchased many bodies from Mitch @ KnE Guitars. He does a good job.

I saw BYO guitar has this kit for $175. I never bought any of their stuff.

I think one time or another I paid that much for a pickup.

I bought a guitarfetish body. I'd go ebay

How is the guitarfetish body? I was looking at it, but I'm not sure, since it's poplar. I'm not familiar with poplar guitars.
