Looking for 6L6 tube modern tone, head room on the clean channel would be good. Since i'm old, modern is early 90's mesa. 6505+, Blackstar metal 100?

Line 6 Spider Valve Combo $400 max, great jazzy cleans, crazy high gain. L6 get crapped on. The guitarist in my old band had one and he made it sound brilliant.

Peavey Triple XXX. You can get them pretty cheap and they're great amps!

Need multiple channels?

If not, I think the winner is either the 5150/6505 or the Peavey VTM 60 or 120. Both are of the same lineage (5150 succeeded the VTMs). VTM was used by Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) and also extensively by John Baizley (Baroness) among several other players.

What is your budget? Sometimes you'll find a VHT D60 or D120 for $800 or so...

I just picked up an early Peavey 5150. I have Friedmans, Bogner, Mesa etc..and to me, the 5150 boosted with a Tube screamer is an AMAZING amp. Very tight, TONS of gain, lots of 6L6 bottom end. And they can be had cheap.

If I was looking for one amp and had limited funds, the 5150 with a V30 cab is where it's at.

Pretty happy with my Peavey Vypyr Tube 60. Got it used for $300 three or four years ago.

Thinking about trying a 6505+ (and pulling 2 power tubes).

Peavey vyper 120 combo with sanpera 2 footswitch if you can find on the cheap. Will hang with a halfstack. If you already have a cab, used Peavey 5150/6505, 5150II/6505+, XXX, JSX, XXX 2, 6534+. A TS808 through the crunch channel of a 6505+, and an eq in the loop is very heavy.

Hey man, just for fun I pulled two power tubes, I plugged in My Alessandro bias and matching meter. Switched to 8 ohm and fired up my 6505+ into my EVH v30/EVH 4x12 16 ohm cab. There's not a lot of adjustment with the bias. With it as low as possible, it was running each power tube at 40ma at idle. The tubes were rated at 30. I had never done this and ran it like this for a while. Conclusion: Channel 3 was meaner than a pitbull that had been kicked in the nuts! Bias is running a little high. Just thought I'd let you know if you decide to go this route.

Haters gonna hate....
But I bought a brand new bugera 6260 head for $220 from musicians friend. Sounds as good as any 5150 I had owned.

5150/6505 certainly fits the bill. My buddy has a Blackstar (HT60?) combo and loves it. They're relatively cheap if I recall.
