Mogami/ Canare cable stripper?

Almost ready to pull the trigger on some cable for my pedal board but have never made my own cables with Mogami/Canare cable. Do you need a special wire stripper to cut off the outer layers or can it be done with normal wire stripper?

Mogami mini the best bet for pedalboard cables or would Canare mini be better?

I'd use the Mogami and I use Canare cable too, mostly for instrument cable. I just use a wire cutter to strip away the insulation.

Sorry I don't know about the required tools for this, but I can tell you that Dave Friedman recommends Mogami w2319 cable, Neutrik straight connectors, and Redco right angle connectors.

I used to work IT a few years ago and had this lying around..

I use it to strip the outer wire, takes a matter of seconds for a clean perfect cut .

Something liek this for the inner wires. Mainly because I usually suck at stripping it with a regular stripper

I usually cut them longer than the length required so I can strip them really easy, and just cut them to length afterwards.

I bought one a radioshack strips both jacks and is adjustable works perfect for what you are doing.

Well I don't have that actual brand but something similar Works wonders for making instrument/speaker cables!

I guess I'm old school, when stripping wires, especially for racks and pedalboards I like to use a really sharp exacto knife! I find wire strippers to be too much sometimes!

but I'd like to know what cable to use as I've used mogami in the past and maybe want to use something else???

For a pedal board Mogami is what you want. The Canare is more durable for instrument cable, but tends to be stiffer.

Mogami 2319 is just fine for pedal boards, but I would use 2524 for instrument cable.

I use Switchcraft plugs for pedal and patch cords.

Oh, I use Canare w/ Switchcraft ends. All of you razorblade and exacto knife users...try that 1st stripper that cyndicate suggested. It uses razors in it and cuts very quick and clean. Once you figure out which blade to use for outer & inner part of the cable, it's a breeze.

looking at the canare and the mogami again as I'm placing the order this weekend. Just from the pics, the Canare looks like it would be easier to solder. The mogami looks like it has foil shielding and I bet that would be a bear to solder without it going up in flames. Canare has a braided copper shield and that would be extremely easy to solder.

Or am I missing something?

I forget the model Canare cable I have... I have around a 100' (maybe more- it's been a while since I checked), and it's the 4 conductor cable, so it can be used for mic cable, MIDI cable, or instrument cable-- and it's a bit more of a pain to work with, imo-- but I really like it. It's as though the cable has no memory. By that-- I mean if you roll it into a ball and stick it under a box of heavy misc... stuff for 6 months, and then get it out-- there are no kinks in it.

The Mogami is actually very easy to work with.

I just re-read everything I wrote and am laughing, because I see that this is likely not helping at all-- re: helping you to decide.

I can send you a couple of feet of the Canare (if you want) so you can try before you buy. I don't have any extra Mogami though.

Just say the word Tweed, and consider it done. Just PM me w/ your address/ph#.

Thanks for the offer Zach but I'll just order some. Only thing that's stopping me from ordering Mogami is if it has a foil shield that has to be soldered to ground. I can't tell from the pics on redco's site.

What do you mean by foil shield? The ground on Mogami wire is just untwisted copper. You get the length you need, twist it, and solder it.
