It's tough to find any diezel cabs in Aus and the import rate on a 4x12 over a 2x12 would be an extra $4-500 just in fees.

Anyone any thoughts/comparisons/advice to share, I was even thinking 2 2x12's might be a good setup, do like 4x12's though.

Rock ... is there another kind?

Seriously though I like the Hagen for modern rock, drop D Muse style, not metal though. I've been using a mesa cab but cannot move from the one spot as he sound changes so much, so I'm looking for something with a good spread and lots of bottom end. Dual 4x12's would be great, if only just to look at.

About 2x12" vs 4x12"/frontloaded vs rearloaded concerning spread and low end:
-4x12" has more low end then 2x12"
-Rearloaded has more low end then Frontloaded
-Frontloaded has more spread then Rearloaded

Which would theoretically leave you with the 4x12" FL (i'd say with V30s or V30s/K100 mix).

BUT personally I must say that the 2x12" FL sounds better (just nicer midrange), even though it has less bottom end.
AND if you combine the 2x12" FL with the 2x12" RL you get the most awesome sounding midrange with the same amount of low end as in the 4x12" FL. (but yet again I use a 4x12" because it looks cool)

I know how all the cabs sound like, because this year at the music-fair in Germany Jamie from Diezel UK and I tested every cabinet-combination with Herbert, VH4, D-moll and Hagen.

My advice would be to go for a single 2x12" FL, because it still has more low end then you need in a band context (it has as much or even more low end then most 4x12"s out there (Marshalls e.g.), it has great spread and it just really sounds great. A 4x12" will give you more low end (which you don't need in a band) and the 4x12"-prestige (it's just posing, but it's fun!).

Hope I could help!

More importantly, do you jam or gig? Do you record more than gig? Or do you need a do-all?

If you gig, what are the other members using? What size venues?

Answer these and you'll answer your own question

Peace,
Uncle Mo

If you want to use a 2 by 12 cab. I would
recommend the K100.

Best,

hmmm, I'll chew it over but thanks very much for the replies, great info there kev. I'll maybe grab a cheap 1960a while I figure out what's what.

Hi... I tried the FL V30 and the RL V30, in my band situation I ended up with a 212 RL with V30. I play an Einstein 100, that´s a different amp from the Hagen, of course :-)
But I had too much Bass with my 412 RL V30, and less warmth with my FL V30 (which I really liked for its very articulated and straight signal, which was usefull to get yourself heard in ANY Mix). Now I think, the 212 is best from both, it´s very straight sounding, but also warm and thick, but the Bass response is faster than from my 412 RL. I also gained Presence as well, I could decrease my Mids and Treble/Presence! AND - I had to decrease my Mastervolumen three times during our practice yesterday evening!
And I could increase my Deep and Bass, without getting lost! I´m satisfied!

Of course it ist a special situation, a small room, with two guitar Amps, Bass and Drums, we play Hardcore/Punkrock. But I also play in a Classic/Hardrockband and the Cabinet sounds good as well! It fits in the Bands´mix, and the diffenrences in Sound I need comes from my Einstein (Eq, amount of Gain, Vol. etc.) and my guitar!

Btw. Trust Papa! If he say "try G12Ks", you should try! :-) I will do so, if I can get one or two G12Ks one day...

To my ears Diezels do not sound so good with the T75 speaker in a 1960 or 1936 on its own (There is a weird spike around 1,6k).
But I do like them loaded with V30s!!! The cabs can't translate the Diezel low-end, but imo they fit great in any band situation.
Marshall cabs often get a lot of hate here from the fanboys, but honestly they just simply work well. So if you grab something till you make your mind, rather pay a few more bucks on the V30 loaded. You can always sell it again for the same price, so no worries there.

Maybe just go to the music store nearby with the biggest selection and test a bunch of cabs with your Hagen to get more of an idea of what you need.
Also if you are using the AxeFx II in your setup, you can use the tone-match to make your cab sound (just sound! no spread or low-end response is affected by this) like any other cab out there.

Have a kick-ass day!

Picked up a cheapy at the weekend, your spot on ... not keen on it at all, the amp sounds thinner and seems to have lost it's bottom end. I've had a few 1960's and generally like them and on the upside my PT100 sounds much better with it than with V30's which didn't suit it at all.

I guess Diezel cabs or a V30 based alternative is the way to go, good tip on the axe btw.
