For the life of me I don't get the 5150 thing at all...I had a block logo 5150 when they first came out and I got rid of it before 6 months passed for the VHT Pit Bull Classic. I know Machine Head uses 5150s (and 6505s) for quite awhile now, but they didn't on their first record...what did they use on that ?

They used 5150s on Burn My Eyes. Logan Mader produced a record I played on, he actually showed me the the "Burn My Eyes 5150"...Was still in the studio rack, along with an early Recto.

My buddy has a FJA modded Framus Cobra and that fucker is unholy. Absolutely brutal.

My Philips Philishave with 3 blades. Has that amazing growl, with that sharp and cutting edge, especially for grindcore.

I've never played a Framus so I can't comment...but I have played a few Engls and I can't say I was impressed at all...Diamonds too...didn't like 'em.

Without a boost, definitely the Engl SE or in my case the E570 preamp and 850/100 power amp. Basically a stereo SE. Huge bottom and tight as fuck!

What, no Natas or Satan?

Because, for most of us those amps might as well be in an alternate dimension. Who here has even played one?

This is true. The Natas and Satan are like Unicorns...they don't exist.

Wow "Burn Me Eyes" i really cant believe that that amazing metal tone came out of an original 5150 that tone and alot of the riffs on that album are amazing... Let Freedom Ring with a Shotgun Blast!
-mp-

Being very familiar with the 5150/6505 amps... they don't get close to the Diezel Herbert IMO. From what I have played...

1. Diezel Herbert
2. Bogner Uberschall (2nd revision)
3. Engl Powerball
4. tie between the Recto and 5150

I'll have to be sacrilegious here and say I think that particular tone doesn't hold up so well. It's the songs and riffs that put it over the top. I loved it big time when it came out but I can't say I care for the tone now. Now I think this might have been 5150 as well or at least partly and it holds up for me in a big way....

I ran this exact setup for a couple of years, and it's definitely brutal. That power amp is better than any other I've tried. It's stupid expensive, but you get huge low end and real punchy mids.

Dinos's modded jcm800

I haven't heard an amp since that has the bite that amp has

Yeah, I got mine used but in mint condition for $1300 as opposed to $2400 new. I tried the E570 with a bunch of different power amps before I finally got the 850/100. I couldn't believe the difference once I got it. Just huge!!

Yes sir..."Heartwork", primarily 5150 again. BTW, for you guys that keep mentioning the Diezel Herbert: I LOVE my Herbert...But I consider it to be a bit too refined, balanced and "produced" sounding to attain maximum "brutal" tone. When I think "brutal" (and I rarely do), I think of a much rawer, over the top presentation...Just me thoughts. All of that being said, I believe that the Herbert absolutely the thickest sounding amp I have ever owned, fantastic all around actually.

I sold my TwinJet.

And had to get another.

It's low end to me makes it one of the top contenders in the crushing department - just had another go at mine tonight. Brootz? Daaaaayum.....

So far the Herbert is the only amp mentioned that doesn't need a boost.
Ever played the SE? It's a Herbert +10%. Seriously. Ran em side by side too. Copped very similar metal tones...
+1 for the SE

Any amp that needs a boost should be disqualified on principal if you are trying to declare the title of "Most Brutal Amp Ever". That's like declaring someone that is a well known user of steroids as the best athlete ever.

I wish I had that pic of my friends studio but there is a Engl SE sitting there collecting dust because its next to a Cameron modded XTC and a Cameron Modern mod SLP. Those guys are ten years younger than me and play that super heavy crab core stuff too.

Framus Cobra, hands down. I've owned 'em all.
Yup.......I owned damn near every high gain head up till about 2009 (Including the Cobra)
and my FJA modded Recto is the tops for that stuff.
Of course all 'heavy' amps are going ot have different voices...so it will be a matter of taste I guess.
Can only add so much gain...
