The Evil Pumpkin

yes. i wish it was mine.

This amp will walk all over any Herbert on the planet. I know, I used to have a Herbert and it could not even come close to hanging with the EP. To me, brutal means super tight with the ability to track fast all while having punishing lows with articulate mids. I think a VH4 on Ch 3 does better brutal tones than a Herbert.

in my room, the top 5 are
dar fbm
pittbull ultralead
diezel herbert
framus cobra modded
randall x2 (loves me some drunken dimebag tone)

all heads must be played though the corpse-rig. 4x12 on top of an isp vector sub. nothing but a gate in front of the amp, or you are a girl. you too, laura. (weird, the only other person who gates like i do is a chick.lol)

sounds killer man.....gotta check out a sub one day.

In my ear the Dual Rectifier ..... the fizz & flub just make it more brutal. No boost needed - just get the poweramp running hot and the midrange turned up....
Most of the amps mentioned on this thread are voiced to polite & smooth, tight -they do not really growl .... heavy but - not what I hear as brutal.

I guess it has a lot to do with someones idea of brutal ?

So, if 5150, why not the original it was copied after? ;)
The SLO voicing ....

So far the Herbert is the only amp mentioned that doesn't need a boost.
Ever played the SE? It's a Herbert +10%. Seriously. Ran em side by side too. Copped very similar metal tones...
+1 for the SE

Any amp that needs a boost should be disqualified on principal if you are trying to declare the title of "Most Brutal Amp Ever". That's like declaring someone that is a well known user of steroids as the best athlete ever.

I wish I had that pic of my friends studio but there is a Engl SE sitting there collecting dust because its next to a Cameron modded XTC and a Cameron Modern mod SLP. Those guys are ten years younger than me and play that super heavy crab core stuff too.

Think you're missing the point....I use my SD-1 as a clean boost with EVERY amp that I've owned. Not that they need it per se, but something about that extra volume slamming the input of an amp really brings them to life.

To my ears, nothing sounds more pissed off than a 5150/6505 with a Tubescreamer variant pushing it. Most other high gainers don't have that grind in the mids.........even the boutiques. Love it or hate it......no denying that its "brutal".

Agreed.

Yup and yup.

I like the Uberschall Twin Jet for this, Diezel Hagan gets there but I still can't beat a recto with the mids cranked

From clips I've heard, the NATAS/SATAN through H30s probably gets my vote. It's just so clear, tight and punishing.

Of the amps Ive played, probably an Engl Invader, VHT UL or VH4(all unboosted of course)

The Über and a boosted Rectum were pretty crushing as well, but in a huge, falling-apart heavy sludgy way:)

I think my feeling of Brutal is different. Big Low end is not brutal if there aren't mids and top end that just breath fire or have some serious growl. A lot of modern amps are all about big lows but soft mids. They sound big but not brutal. I was jamming on a Mark V today and got some sounds out of it that I thought were petty fucking brutal. That is a mean sounding amp (with the right pickups)

If a boost is OK I would say a good JCM800 with a pedal is tops for me.

I agree. I don't like a lot of modern metal tones because despite the big low end & low mids, they just don't have that "chunk", as well as lacking the chug and grind in the midrange and the searing crunch on the top end.

Meanwhile this is bloody brutal!

Wow "Burn Me Eyes" i really cant believe that that amazing metal tone came out of an original 5150 that tone and alot of the riffs on that album are amazing... Let Freedom Ring with a Shotgun Blast!
-mp-

that amp is modded. i forget where i read that, but he had someone tweak the circuit for him.

for me of the amps i dont own, or haven't played hands down....

20-45Hz. Never say never. Just say rarely.
50-90hz Ahh the madness. Here's the 'swing' range in our 'chugging'.
100-150 Bottom of the meat.
180-240 Lo-Center of the meat.
250-320 Hi-Center of the meat.
340-650 Danger Will Robinson. Top of meat/Bottom of mids. CRITICAL.
700-900 More danger. Hard to hear. Kills 'newbies' on contact. Will explain.
950-1.2k Pure Satan. Make or break ya. Easy to hear. Hard to control.
1.3k-1.6k Ditto the above.
1.7k-2.2k Top of the mids/Bottom of pick attack range. Oh, the fear.
2.3k-3.1k Middle of pick range. Picky de poison. Mucho Satania.
3.2k-4.2k Top of pick range. Pick out a nice coffin. Yer gonna need it.
4.3k-6.5k Bottom of fizz. Add Beefeaters for gin fizz. Guzzle many glasses.
6.6k-8k. Top of fizzy. Many will kill this range ruthlessly. Careful. Can O' wormies.
8k-10k Road to hell. Paved with good intentions. Enjoy. Not.
10-15k Less obvious road(s) to hell. Gravel. Lose a windshield up here.
15k-25k Same disclaimer as 25-40Hz. Can you say 'sometimes bandwidth matters'?
WhaddaWeGot? 17 ways(freq. ranges) to kill yourself?
