Well, this thread turned into a free for all on what the poster owns as being the best high gain and natural sounding amp....

Most everything listed here so far, with exception of a couple, cannot even handle its own gain without falling to pieces and sounding like shit.

A bit pretentious, maybe? I don't own one of the amps I mentioned.

Well, no shit. Why do you think we own what we own

And, I'm right about the Mesas :D

A lot. We're not discussing Axfx so well the amps mentioned aren't as good. Well, until the next firmware update when things sound so much better than before. ;)

for price I like the Framus Dragon version 3 best. it need a proper tube and bias but it's smooth. vintage tone with modern response and feel. marshall like to mesa like with the tightness of a 5150 but more tone.

on the upper end I like the SLO 100. ENGL's invader's pretty cool but not what I call smooth. I think the friedman brow eye in saturated mode is pretty awesome too.

I think given the choice i'd go with a FORTIN Meathead or similar. the DAR FBM-100's were nice too.

Wizard MC (yes it's HIGH gain) or Metal 100...Organic sounding, reasonably "open, lot's of natural sounding character and capable of crushing tones.

Well considering how much is going on in a higher gain setting on any amp there's probably nothing natural about it

To me, I guess 'natural' sounding would be no fizz, percussive low end, and a ton of sustain along with good string separation. I think a lot of amps can hit that, dialed in correctly.

Hey, for the record I don't own a Marshall, an 808 stomp, a Mesa or a Friedman.

Just sayin'

Anything Friedman...I have an RSC Plexi MTS module that he made for Steve Stevens back when Steve was using MTS...Long story short, this amp sounds as natural as any I've heard...

Go to YT and listen to a Big Log by Robert Plant. The guitar is glorious. Haunting leads and plucked chords. Robbie Blunt is the player. Lots of live vids and confirmation of his Boogie amps.

He used a Boogie MKII for most shows and arguably in the studio. It has an awesome tone. Then go to the high gain side, you get that glorious Boogie Mark Series tone.

I have. MKIIC, it is a pretty amazing amp. The versatility is usually limited by its owner more than the amp. You literally go from Big Log haunting Strat to Master of Puppets. No hype there, just what it does. Finding a simul class GEQ model is worth the time.

Such a subjective question....my personal fave is the Cornford MK50...a nice compromise....

I would agree with this. A friend has a MK50, and he gets the most natural, raw sounding tone I've ever heard from an amplified guitar, however subjective that expression might be.

That being said, I'm not really against processed sounding amps, such as my Mark V - which has my favourite high-gain lead tones, barring the IIC+ (which I've never played).

For me Bogner 101b or 20th el34. These amps to e let the fundamental guitar note and tone come thru and that to me is a big part of sounding natural...I want to hear the tone and width of the note and these amps let that thru IMO.

Are people supposed to talk about ones they don't have experience with....I heard Dumble Amps sound pretty organic, that better?

Rockstah(RIP) Mod 5 Modded Marshall.(Modded by The Late Rockstah-Mark not by others).........

The real problem is the word "natural" in the original question .... what does that even mean ?

I can not think of any "high gain amp" that is natural sounding at all. It is completely synthetic in every way.

Two in my stable come to mind, Carol Ann (really any Carol Ann) Triptik, and a really good Bogner XTC Classic I have

I havent had any older tube amps, in fact most of my early music career was all on solid states. But my first big amp was a Red Bear MK120 and was made in st. petersburg Russia. It was a single channel all tube head that had a big red button that was i guess supposed to give you a gain boost but all it really did was cause a huge volume boost and massive feedback. But running wihtout the red button it had a fat organic sweet clean that was great for clean stuff.. But at the time I was in a metal band and ran it with a Boss MT-2 Metalzone out in front and it did sound huge with that pedal very nice (I could get alot of great distortions out of the MT2 with its paremetric EQ on the mids).. Since then ive run a couple of Line 6's that were about as processed a sound as you can possibly get.. then MTS went up to 4 MTS amps which were very organic with some of the modded modules... now back to 3 tube amps and an MTS preamp and 4 modules.. 1 of which is very sweet sounding vintage fender vibrolux module..
