I just tried the fortin nameless and I am just amazed how far amp sims has come
What's everyones favorite pc amp sims ?

I haven't spent hours tweaking, but I've been disappointed with both versions of BIAS if a real amp is the basis for comparison. I'll use it for silent practice or when trying to figure parts out but I don't find it good enough to use for tracking.

From what I've seen/heard the Fortin Nameless and Mercurial Reaxis are the best. I tried Bias, we even used it for recording, but I'm not a fan of it.

My pc monitors/speakers suck but to my ears STL Tonality sounded pretty good without tweaking. I have the Fortin Nameless and thought it sounded kind of thin but didn't spend much time tweaking. Spent too much time tweaking Helix native and its sounds ok once you add good IRs.

I also couldn't get along with Bias PC. I've heard amazing productions from it but I couldn't do it. I haven't tried any of the newer stuff but from clips the STL sounds the best to me. I've had good results with Revalver, Thermionik and Ignite as my top 3. Using a really good IR made a big difference.

I bought Nameless after a free trial. Really amazed at how realistic it is.

I really want to check out the proprietary BE-100 sim but I don’t have a Universal Audio interface.

My go tos in the past have been Guitar Rig and Amplitube. Both solid with a lot to offer.

My favorites are

Marshall : Mercuriall Spark for plexis (bass and lead), jcm800 and AFD.
ENGL : Mercuriall U530 (e530 preamp).
Mesa : Mercuriall Reaxis .. tip : Use U530 with reaxis poweramp and Fx. Disable Reaxis preamp.
Fortin : Neural DSP Nameless and NTS
Fender : ? I guess S-gear but it's not my thing
Vox : Thermionik Vocal30.
Peavey (5150) : TSE X50 or Thermionik Psycho A-B-C
Friedman : Thermionik (forgot the model name)
Soldano : Thermionik or Amplitube SLO model. Use external cabsim.
Bogner : Not a lot of players here.. Thermionik Ogr (there is two). Mercuriall hinted the next sim could be an Esctacy on facebook

The IR is the make or break thing. Not all IR are "compatible" with software ampsim. Some will sound awfull but with real amps will sound OK.
Thermionik have models in all the major categories and they can be tweaked to sound great.
A great dummy-proof IR is celestion Heritage greenback. It just sounds great with all the above ampsim

Forgot to add : Ignite amp Emissary (or any other ampsim) with their NadIr. It an original higain design.
It sounds as good as any other (premium) ampsim. It's free.

My favorites TS pedals are Mercuriall TS and Gridslammer (both free), TSE TS-808 (free)
Mercuriall Chorus pedals is awesome too. (free)

You can disable Neural DSP ampsim to use the cab section with any other ampsim. It's good.

I trialed the Fortin Nameless plug-in and thought it was pretty damn cool, loved how you could switch mic’s, change the placement, use your own IRs, Grind pedal, etc.. but I found it so bright and jangly so I skipped it for the NTS and preordered that one.
The NTS was the opposite, I found it very dark and congested and now I wish I had bought the Nameless instead because it was more flexible in my opinion and I could have worked on dialing out the aspects I didn’t like. The NTS character didn’t change much with different mic’s, eq, IRs.

Ola mentionned in it's review that you must not be afraid to go to the extremes of the controls with the NTS.
I can almost emulate the Nameless with the NTS if you use the Grind pedal in the NTS and play with the 666 controls. Lower the Girth (bass distortion) and raise the grind (higher distortion). Lower the mids, raise the presence.

A friend of mine used amp sims and IRs for an album he recorded, basically replicating his live amp rig. It sounded alright through computer speakers, however in the car doesn't sound near as good at all.

Yes, it think it's the case too... I also think that since ampsim tones are easily reproductible, they have "no value" since they take no effort,no hardware, almost no time
or knowledge and are not unique.

A mic'ed real amp with a real cab is a science, takes time, expensive hardware, money and knowledge. It's cost something so it's worth something and it's unique.

Ampsim are great as a tool, not as a final product.
IMO.
