From Guitar World interview:
http://www.guitarworld.com/interview-ja ... h-magnetic
"A lot of it has to do with playing my old guitars again. I’m actually using the white V and the old Explorers that I played on the first few albums. I’m also plugging into the Mesa/Boogie Mark II C+ that we used on all the early albums."
"I always think I can make my sound better. So you get every amp company in the world coming in with their latest product, including prototypes of things that haven’t even been built yet, and at first it’s like going to guitar heaven. But then I start plugging everything in, and by the time I whittle it down, I’m back with my Eighties Mesa/Boogie “crunch berries.”

RTL and MOP are still 2 of the greatest metal albums ever. 2. Metallica is still helping the metal genre and carrying the torch. They will only help other metal bands along the way.
And for as much flak as Kirk takes for his lead playing has the guy ever said a bad word about anyone ever? What if he had an ego like Yngwie? Kirk seems like a stoner you'd meet at a backyard keg party. It would have been easy for him to have bad mouthed Mustaine but seems like Dave was the one who had a lot to say.
Anyway, I liked the last album and this one sounds even better.

He whores out sig amps that sound like garbage while James sticks to the good old mesa mk's for the most part. James should be in charge of writing more of the solos too. But overall it's still the best they've done in a long time.
James hasn't used a Mesa Mark amp in about 20 years.
James' main amp for the last 10 years or so has been the Diezel VH4... much darker, more bass, compressed tone compared to a Mesa Mark. They sound very different. Occasionally a Triaxis preamp to Mesa Strategy poweramp.
Sorry but you are dead wrong. Look at any of the recent studio pics. He's blending the VH4 with his old IIC+ and a Wizard MC.
