Moth Into Flame

Ozzy: Yeah I agree the tone he's getting from the last two ain't nothing like MoP or AJFA, which I also love, but it's the same amps.

Daneyo: My guess is they are freebies Mesa throw his way for the giveaways and auctions. Typically the gear he uses on those guest spots for the Anthems is auctioned off for a charity or benefit, makes sense Mesa would paint one up for him to play though, good PR for them. He's used the VH4 a couple of times, but those times its never been a charity auction/giveaway deal afterwards, doubt he'd give his VH4 away and I don't think he get's em free. He had a stage backline of Rectos and such during the St Anger tour, I'm pretty sure it was just a for show set up, I think his main rig was backstage and had the VH4 involved.

He seems to have at least two Mark IIC+ Coli's, one has the "Crunch Berries" label under the Mesa/Boogie plate, and the other seems to have a Black album Metallica Sticker over the Mesa/Boogie plate. The one in the Moth clip is the Black album sticker one, the one in the studio above is the 'Crunch Berries' one. Google for the image and you'll see the black album sticker version in his live rig from that tour, it also has a little Ernie Figurine on top.

I thought his solo was supposed to represent a bunch of moths mindlessly fluttering around a bug zapper. The director of the video seems to convey that since the only time you see moths in the room with them is during his solo, directly in front of him.

 [/quote]

We need to get Metallica jamming on some real amps...PETERS!!!! :)

We should start a petition to have a version of this Metallica album released without Kirk's solos. It could be called the "good taste" version, just like a remastered, or remixed version...

I get the feeling the band likes Kirks use of the wah. Lars seems to produce his solos and guides him what to play.

I love Metallica. St Anger was the only record that I never could get remotely into. Kirk is Kirk. What does he have to prove ? He is on cruise control but I still find him enjoyable. Of course I still like DLR so take it fwiw.

It's all good people criticizing Kirks solos and the tone but the only people that really notice or give a fuck are the 1% know it all's on forums like these. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album. New stuff to me sounds awesome.

But the same solo in every song that is not awesome won't drive you nuts?? It is like listening to Malmsteen on everything after and including War to end all Wars. The best sound the album makes is when you hit the stop button. At least this one should be alright rhythmically but 10 songs with shit leads just don't do it for me. Also piss poor producing if the guy is so far gone that he doesn't know how to end a lead.

As a fanboi, I wish Kirk would go outside the box a bit with his solos and really experiment. Who knows though, this is only the second song we have heard. I don't mind the wah, or even the blues riffs, etc. but just don't want him to stay in that vein for every song. I'd like to hear a "Struggle Within" type solo or "Fade to Black", etc.

So if the 'know it all's' are the only ones who care....why is he even in the band?

I think its healthy to criticize and evaluate. Like I said, and many others have said...it just seems like a wasted opportunity for the lead guitarist in a band of this magnitude to put out the same solo (or style of solo) in every song for 25 years. I guess you could say 'look at EVH/YJM/Lynch/Zakk etc' and make the same argument...

The difference I guess, is EVH et-al are badasses by even the measure of guys like us who have been listening to badasses for 40 years.

It's subjective. There's no empirical argument to be made. Mike Campbell can't play 1 10th the NPS I can play...but he's legit and I'm typing on a forum. I just wish Kirk would at least try....it doesnt sound like he's trying. OTOH ... maybe he believes this is his 'style' and he is determined to cram it up my ass. If so...more power to him.

I cannot wait for the new album. This song renewed my hope for them. Love the riffs love the harmonized parts, overall much more impressed with this than hardwired. Everybody rags on Kirk, and yeah he's gotten a little sloppy over the years and he ain't gonna win any guitar player of the year awards. Ive met the guy once, and i asked him But when those 4 guys all come together as a band, theres a magic there that only they can do. As individuals, they'd be nothing. Metallica IS those 4 guys.

Overall, both new releases are good imo.

I tried to figure out what it is that I cant put my finger on being the culprit.

Again, my opinion, too dark sounding amps. Gear is a huge factor. Sabbath's 13 could've indeed sounded closer to the 1970's vibe they were going for, if they had used vintage amps... just saying. You want to sound like a certain time period, then use the appropriate gear.

Another thing that hit me... James

His vocals.. again my opinion, and I will get crucified for this.. his vox are really killing this thing.

I am trying not to be that guy and say, they dont sound like RTL or MOP.. blah blah...

But really, his vox. It is what it is.. its not changing, so I guess I will deal with it. He's not going anywhere and neither is his voice so....

I still say the guitar tone is a modern twist on there older tones

Kirks shitty tone annoys me more than his lazy playing. He whores out sig amps that sound like garbage while James sticks to the good old mesa mk's for the most part. James should be in charge of writing more of the solos too. But overall it's still the best they've done in a long time.

James hasn't used a Mesa Mark amp in about 20 years.

James' main amp for the last 10 years or so has been the Diezel VH4... much darker, more bass, compressed tone compared to a Mesa Mark. They sound very different. Occasionally a Triaxis preamp to Mesa Strategy poweramp.

Sorry but you are dead wrong. Look at any of the recent studio pics. He's blending the VH4 with his old IIC+ and a Wizard MC.

What was this that he was using for a while? It looks like a Stiletto but of course everyone thought it was some custom Mesa. Who knows?

I thinkthat stiletto might be a chrome chassis rev F that might be I the st anger video just a theory

I thought it was not bad. I believe all of us have wondered about the gear they use at one time or a other. Glad to see you around Joey.

The issue could be that in order to do that he or James would have to compose an interesting rhythm track for him to solo over. I think that's the key to great solos (sometimes). Otherwise he's kinda stuck having to solo over E...again. Just a suggestion for Kirk.
