After 5 weeks of waiting I received my Afwayu today. Got everything ready to install it. Took out the Duncan JB and went to throw the Afwayu in only to find that it doesn't fit. The pickup cover is slightly larger than the pickup cavity. WTF?

So, I had to spend an hour or two trying to get the pickup cover off. That was a bitch. The wax kept melting and I had to wait a while between each go to let the wax harden again. I'd melt the solder and try to place a razor blade in the joint to keep the solder from forming a connection again. It took a while but I finally did it.

Got it in, played for while and my first impression is... meh. :(

Sound alright. More bass-heavy than my JB, slightly more lower-mids, slightly less treble. It's not harsh like the JB, which is nice. But it also lacks character, unlike the JB. And it doesn't clean up as well. It's sort of fizzy. It definitely has a thicker sound to it, but it can seems to be a bit muddy.

For cleans, I like it more than the JB actually. It's a bit mellow and moody. But once you throw some gain at it, it becomes a little... I don't know. It's meaty, definitely but it just doesn't have any flavor. It's sort of flat sounding. Hard to describe.

I'll wait until I play with my buddy (drummer) and crank the amp loud to hear the real difference. Right now I've been playing at about cranked stereo volume (VH4's master at 9:00).

But so far, I think I like the JB more (even at these volumes). I'll probably wind up going back to the JB and switch up the wiring from 50's style to Modern style. The reason I bought the Afwayu was because since the addition of new pots, the guitar has been a bit brighter (went from 300k to 500k, but they have a better sweep than stock). And I wanted to try something new. I heard the Afwayu was like the JB, just more balls and less harsh. I can see how that description applies, but it also lacks in the "character" department. And it just doesn't clean up very well.

I may just throw the stock pots back in and switch back to the JB with 50's wiring. Don't know yet.

Anybody else use the Afwayu? Care to share your thoughts?

I've got a pair on my les paul, I think they sound great. Honestly so far they are my favorite pickups to date. I've got some Dimarzio's that sound pretty good, but the Awfayu to me is hard to describe, but kind of like a Norton nice warm thick feel, but with more bite and clarity and I don't feel it will dissolve so much in a mix. It also isn't harsh or nasally sounding. Great pickups.

Warm and thick is how it sounds to me as well. To me, its bite comes from how fizzy it is. I actually like that JB's nasal quality. I'll keep it in for a few weeks, but I can pretty much see myself going back to the JB.

If you took the pickup cover off I would imagine you messed with the poll pieces ? Wouldnt the tone be affected ?

That was my exact experience. I thought it was "ok" when I first installed it, then I hated it after about 2 days. I don't understand the hype.

You don't need to touch the pole pieces to remove the cover. You just desolder the back and the cover slips right off. You see those two blobs of solder on the back by the edges? That's all that holds a cover onto a pickup. The pole pieces fit through holes in the cover, but they don't hold it down or anything.

I think it has to do with Jerry Cantrell using them for a while. I've never used an Afwayu but I'm highly impressed with the Black Belts in my Silverburst

I was actually contemplating going with the 2nd Degree Black Belts but after talking to people and talking to Wade, I went with the Afwayu.

fizzy and muddy?
mine is very aggressive for sure, but definitely not fizzy

did you play with the height?

Ya,not sure how to describe the Afwayu but thick and nice, not fizzy at all,one of my favorite sounding pickups hands down, and sounds good with the volume rolled off,I like them better than the 2nd degrees over all but not for the classic stuff, but thats me

Sounds like a killa combo

I've tried playing with the height. Maybe fizzy isn't the best adjective. But there's definitely more "hair" than the JB.

I would would say much more than the JB for sure

maybe you're not used to its dry feel
it's a big sounding pickup, but not really warm

Yeah, it has a bigger footprint than the JB. My Afwayu was also custom wound. Not sure how it's different from a regular Afwayu, but Wade said he'd custom wind it to suite my playing style and gear. So maybe it's not the same a normal version.

The other thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that by removing the cover you have changed the intended tone of the pickup. Wade compensates for the cover in the winds. With the cover off I believe the pickup will have more treble, which is maybe where your perception of the "fizz" is coming in? Too bad you had to take the cover off, I can totally see why you wouldn't like the pickup after that.

My afwayu is anything but fizzy.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. The covers mellow it out some more than likely.

I have an Afwayu in the G&L Cantrell Signature. Ordered mine with exposed bobbins though and it fit right in. I find it to be thick and very responsive to volume roll off. Lots of gain in it for sure, compared to stock pick ups and probably a JB. Maybe you should mess with the caps a bit on the LP before taking it out.
