If you like the JB, you should try an Anderson HN3 at some point.

Who wants to buy an Afwayu? It's the best pickup I've ever heard. Totally screams! I'm just moving in a different direction, stylistically...

$400 obo.

I never bought into the Afwayu hype. If I want to get my Jerry on, the JB works just fine.

Jerry has his own Motor City model now...I don't think he uses the Afwayu anymore.

I didn't buy it because Jerry Cantrell uses it. I bought it because I heard good things from the people who own one and had also tried a JB.

No one says you have to like it, I didn't realize there was so much hype about it, I told Wade what I was looking for and asked what he recommended and he said Awfayu's sounded like a good choice, I found a pair used and snagged em up!

I have to agree with the comment about compensating for the winds with an added cover, that could be the possibility, there's a lot of things you can call these pickups but I just don't hear a lot of fizz or anything, there's some but I think it's mostly based on how hot the pickup is... not sure whats happening with yours :(

Wade was the one who suggested I remove the cover. So I doubt it affects how the pickup performs.

After 5 weeks of waiting I received my Afwayu today. Got everything ready to install it. Took out the Duncan JB and went to throw the Afwayu in only to find that it doesn't fit. The pickup cover is slightly larger than the pickup cavity. WTF?

So, I had to spend an hour or two trying to get the pickup cover off. That was a bitch. The wax kept melting and I had to wait a while between each go to let the wax harden again. I'd melt the solder and try to place a razor blade in the joint to keep the solder from forming a connection again. It took a while but I finally did it.

Got it in, played for while and my first impression is... meh. :(

Sound alright. More bass-heavy than my JB, slightly more lower-mids, slightly less treble. It's not harsh like the JB, which is nice. But it also lacks character, unlike the JB. And it doesn't clean up as well. It's sort of fizzy. It definitely has a thicker sound to it, but it can seems to be a bit muddy.

For cleans, I like it more than the JB actually. It's a bit mellow and moody. But once you throw some gain at it, it becomes a little... I don't know. It's meaty, definitely but it just doesn't have any flavor. It's sort of flat sounding. Hard to describe.

I'll wait until I play with my buddy (drummer) and crank the amp loud to hear the real difference. Right now I've been playing at about cranked stereo volume (VH4's master at 9:00).

But so far, I think I like the JB more (even at these volumes). I'll probably wind up going back to the JB and switch up the wiring from 50's style to Modern style. The reason I bought the Afwayu was because since the addition of new pots, the guitar has been a bit brighter (went from 300k to 500k, but they have a better sweep than stock). And I wanted to try something new. I heard the Afwayu was like the JB, just more balls and less harsh. I can see how that description applies, but it also lacks in the "character" department. And it just doesn't clean up very well.

I may just throw the stock pots back in and switch back to the JB with 50's wiring. Don't know yet.

Anybody else use the Afwayu? Care to share your thoughts?

If you're looking for a 'better' sounding JB type pickup for a Les Paul then checkout the Wolfetone Fenris. I have one in mine and it's killer.

lol, love the descriptions and names of those pickups. Care to tell me more about this pickup? I actually think the Marshallhead looks pretty interesting as well.

My experiance so far, the Suhr Aldrich sounds like a JB but not harsh, more output, and more lowend.

But my favorite pup is tie . Aldrich and Afwayu. I love the Aldrich in my strats and I love the Afwayu in my McCartys

Is this the HN3?

Whatever that is, I like it.

From listening to James Lugo's Pickup Shootout clips, my two favorites are the ThroBak SLE101 Limited Plus. But those pickups are $500. So fuck that. The other one is the Aldrich. Although, if the Aldrich is higher output than the JB, I don't think I'd want it as the VH4's input is sensitive to high output pickups and can distort easily.

After reading this thread, I was second guessing pulling my JB in the Charvel for the Afwayu. Honestly I played it for over an hour and there is just something so smooth and pleasing about that pickup. I love the JB too and still keep it in a Les Paul but the Afwayu is a great sounding pick up. I honestly think it depends on what guitar these things are in. So many factors.

Throw up a video of the Afwayu through that Uberschall. :)

I sold the Uber!! Damn!  I can do one through the Friedman in HBE mode, that will be plenty heavy.

Sweet. Do it. And play some stuff like 90's rock/metal through modern rock. None of this 19383 bpm brootz shit.

It's a bit lower output than a JB but I think that gives it more clarity and it still has plenty of punch. The lows are tighter, the mids are pronounced and bark, and the top end is smoother than a JB. It cleans up really nicely too when you back off the volume on the guitar. It's a great rock pickup in a Les Paul imho. They're very responsive to emails too so shoot them a message for more info. I heard about them through the Gear Page and couldn't be happier with the Fenris for what I play(mostly hard rock/80's metal but not downtuned stuff). I think he has a higher output pickup with a ceramic magnet too so that's always an option.
