So I am just about ready to order a new set of Motor City pickups after 2 years of research (yeah I am slow with this stuff!) and have a couple of questions about the 2nd degree blackbelts, so I call the phone # listed on their website and get a message the phone is disconnected!

Anyone know what is up? New phone, or out of business?

I seem to recall getting a message like that, but I thought it said something about the number being changed and then it gave me the new number. If you hung up immediately try it again and see if it gives the new new number.

  He's working on it

Wade is a nice guy and makes great pickups ( I have a Solution), but he does need some improvement in his operations.

Yeah, the product is awesome. But, He is terrible with emails and phone calls. Once you get ahold of wade, he'll go above and beyond to make you happy.

Talked to Wade today (great guy btw) and ordered up my 2nd degree blackbelts, I am pumped! Actually he needs to find someone good and honest to work on his website for some updates he said, told him to ask around here!

Hey Guys...

This yr we did move and expand in March. Whew!! Took a little bit to adjust and get settled in but I am back on the path. My new phone # (734) 525-4590 is up and working. I did however leave a forwarding # for 90 days at the old # as well. This yr I will be revising my site and adding some new products, shirts, stickers, etc but my main battle has been finding some who can do actually put words into action so If any of you know a fellow member out of work or looking for web work, please let me know....
Wait times are down as well, as I have set up my shop very organized and have some part time help with assembly only which has sped things up considerably ( which is good, we want it now!!). My hours of operation are Monday- Friday 10am-6pm. Eastern time. I do not respond to e-mails or calls on Saturday or Sunday but I assure you I am very busy getting orders out for Monday morning- Never a slow day. Feel free to contact me anytime, and I try my best to get back with everyone in a timely maner. As accidents happen, I'm sure I've missed the occasional e-mail or call when things get real busy, sometimes dealing with 50 or 60 e-mails daily but This is not intentional. Appologies. Thanks for your kind words guys...Nice as hell of ya!!
Anytime, anywhere, Wade

psychodave, talk to dave friedman about them.best pickup i have played,my search is over..

I'll wait until psychodave tries them and says they are better than the Adrich, then I'll bite. The man gets a huge tone from his Aldrich in his Charvie.

LOL! I think there is more to Psyhodave's monsterous tone (some of the best I've heard) than his Aldrich PU.

There are plenty of opinions on the 2nd degree blackbelt to be found.. look for some more in the Egnater forum. This pickup is the best tone I have ever had in my LesPaul. It's medium output but it rips it up really good. Hard-rock, 80's metal are where this pickup lives IMHO, but it cleans up amazingly well. On my LesPaul I set the volume of the neck pickup to 1-2 for a warm bell-like clean, bridge pickup full on for a gained out lynch tone on fully boosted plexi. Switching between clean and full-gain is done with the pickup selector. The pure tone of this pickup just makes me want to play more and more....

I am really curious about their tone. I LOVE the Aldrich, but sometimes it seems too compressed. I love my strat with the Voodoo 59, but it is kinds weak...around 8k. The Aldrich is around 16k.

So did you guys order a "set" or did you just order a bridge?

Yeah, it's tough to find a pickup that doesn't have some compression when they are that hot. Lately I have been really liking what I get out of lower output pickups... they are bigger, punchier, more open-sounding and do a really good job of conveying the nuances of the guitar. The blackbelt is hot-vintage that is very balanced throughout it's frequency range. It has a nice bite to it in the top end without over-doing it. The low-end is plenty tight, but not at all tight like the Solution... one thing about the blackbelt is that it is VERY expressive and the nuances of the guitar and your fingers really come through. Dig into it and it rips! Back off on the pressure and it whispers... A very different sort of thing than the Aldrich.

I typically order sets unless I am really not sure about a pickup, then I'll order the bridge with plain black bobbins just to try it out. If I don't like it then it is easier to sell it.

I've been thinking about the 2nd degree blackbelt since I'm a pickup whore. Anyone know how it compares to a Godwood in tone or output? Brighter, darker, hotter, smoother? Thanks!

I ordered a set, should be here by the end of the week. Wade said these are lower output , can't remember where the #'s are at but I think around 8-9k? But even though the output is lower they are not supposed to lack at all in "fullness" from what he and everyone else has said. I'll wait until I replace the BBQ in my Les Paul and hear for myself then comment. I get enough gain from my Cameron's so I don't need PUP distortion - I am looking for full, tight, clear and punchy from the pickup, and the "dirt" from the amp.

How much were they?

You are going to be my test subject

They were $260 / set. Sure I'll be the guinea pig, :D . I actually have read enough helpful reviews from you being a gear whore so I don't mind giving back some

The neck pick up is mind blowing also. Very tight with no sloppy low end and it just sings big fat notes. These pickups also require no compensation on the vol pots to keep the top end very cool.

I have a set of Detroiters in one Les Paul. A set of 2nd Degree BB are next on my list.

dave

Dave is so right....the neck pickup is sick man. No mud, fuzz or anything of the sort yet sings just amazingly well. Can easily get that Sykes woo woo tone man and clean is just so sweet. Gotta get the set in my opinion.
