How much better are they than Dimarzio/Seymour Duncan especially with the PAF designs??
What do you think would be a good replacement for a Duncan Custom 5 in an HH Strat? By 'replacement' I mean comparable output and tone but more open in the mids/highs. The 2nd BB looks very interesting but so does the Detroiter.hatrick00":uv8r4r58 said:way better. my JB sounded like there was a blanket over it after switching to the afwayu.... same with the 2nd Deg BB. For high output grab the afwayu (around 15.8K), for lower get the 2nd BB (around 9.2k). far better than dimarzio and SD IMO.
2nd BB for sure. detroiter was cool, but in my PRS SC245 it had a little too much trebly bite for me. 2nd BB is just so 3D and mean sounding. it sounds so much hotter than 9.2k to me. i settled with the afwayu in the PRS and couldn't be happier... with the SC245 i was having an issue competing with my LPs. by nature the LPs are thicker but they were blowing the PRS away in terms of tone. Now with the Afwayu the PRS can play with the big boys. just my opinion, hopefully it is helpful.SpiderWars":22lv9t3g said:What do you think would be a good replacement for a Duncan Custom 5 in an HH Strat? I have a High Order Maximus in my Les Paul and like it a lot. Considering another for the Strat but MCP looks interesting.
the JB is not a bad pickup..... BUT in my LP Custom Shop Elegant, this simple pickup swap made ALL the difference (and yes i tried different heights). i still have a JB in an ESP eclipse, and still the same sound.... not as OPEN sounding as my motor cities, sounds muffled to me and the people i have let hear the A/b comparison in person. but again, just opinions in the highly subjective topic. if it works for you then play it, have fun, and enjoy it.Racerxrated":179ka1j5 said:I have a set of Detroiters in an 86 Jackson, great articulate PAF tone. But I have a JB in a Charvel Custom and it kills. If you have a JB and it sounds like a blanket is over the guitar then you need to adjust the pickup height or the screws, I've found that if your guitar has average or shit tone to begin with no type of boutique pup is really gonna help it. I had a JB in a Charvel pro mod, sounded average..put an Afwayu in and it sounded a little better. Sold the guitar and put the Afwayu in another Charvel, MUCH better. JBs might not be for everyone but in a good toneful guitar they sound killer IMO.
The JB is a tricky beast for sure. My experience is it either works or doesn't in a guitar. Truth is you could say the same thing about any pickup, but the JB just has such a strong character that I don't find much middle ground with its voicing.hatrick00":3chufddz said:the JB is not a bad pickup..... I had a Hamer that was so fat and rich, you would have thought it was an LP. JB in it was wound by MJ, sought after from the 80s. Sold the guitar but pulled the JB out as the new owner had a Super D to put in. Put that JB in another Strat. Nowhere near as good as the Hamer tonewise. Guitar mattered more than the pup.hatrick00":ex5b8oe4 said:the JB is not a bad pickup..... I had a Godwood and a Detroiter back to back in the same LP. I sold the Godwood and kept the Detroiter in there. The Godwood is an amazing sounding pickup that sounds very sweet and balanced, but I preferred the much more pissed off sounding Detroiter. They're both very similar output, and you can't go wrong with either. I've got a Darkburst in the neck of an LP and it is the best neck pickup that I've ever heard.mdc1mdc11":4ei81ep9 said:anyone done any extensive comparison with the WCR's Godwood, especially the Darkburst (great pickup)?
