Not to highjack this thread, but what MCP would you suggest for an LP? Tone that I would be looking for is something thick and gritty. Something that can cover classic rock type stuff but also do modern/alternative type stuff as well. I currently have Blisster Buckers but I'm wondering if the 2nd degree would be a better pickup for a good thick rock tone and an LP. Thanks!

2nd Degree in a LP for rock = :2thumbsup:

Amen to this.

I can cover metal pretty well in this configuration too.

Yeah, the 2nd Degree's are versatile...the low is real tight, without being stiff...the midrange is very full and complex and the highs are just right - smooth, yet articulate. I would love to try a Detroiter, too sometime, but the 2nd Degree BB's are the best pickups I've ever played. Very organic, open sounding, lots of clarity/string to string definition and full of harmonic overtones...I definitely have no problems playing metal with them either...

Can you give us a tone report, smdb?

Well, I would say that they were darker than I thought they would be. Not too dark at all though. IMO, dark = warm most times, if it is done right, these are done right. I replaced paf pros in a old ibanez rb jem and I really was not looking for much of a change, just a little more chunk and body, the paf's were just a little thin.
The pickups really seems to follow the description on the website, really! Has the punch and tightness of the paf's. Leads sounded just awesome, no piercing highs at all, the midrange seems to be just right and the low end stays pretty tight. Plenty of definition. I use a VH4 so that is a pretty good amp to judge these pickups with. i.m.o.
Pinch harmonics flew off the guitar nicely!

This is not much of a description, I know. All I can really say is it is a warm, but still mean, tight, organic sounding pickup that was exactly what I wanted for this guitar. Every tone I heard last night, I liked! I could change my mind after playing it a while but I doubt it.

I want to try a hotter Motor City p.u for my PRS soon. I hate the stock p.u in that guitar.

Later,
Steve

How does the Detroiter compare to the 2nd Degree BB?

The Detroiter is a little hotter, at around 9.2k. Has much more snarl to it, I always say it sounds like it has 10% P-90 in it. Drives the amp harder and sounds very pissed off. The 2nd Degrees have less push and a little more low end and low mids...very big and open sounding. Both have great clarity and openness and string separation, but the 2nd Degrees have a little more note separation. Both are lower output, but they'll drive your amp harder than you would think...but they are not high output pickups at all.

I totally agree with the P-90 vibe. I forgot to mention that in my last post. It is kinda hard to describe, but it reminded me of the paf-pro that also had the P-90 vibe somewhat. Just waaaay better

I would think that p-90/single coil vibe comes from the lower output of this pickup..

I can vouch for the hell baby, clear powerful and aggressive.

how does the Detroiter compare to the BB 2nd degree for solos? Single line stuff?

Agreed. I would like to try some other MCPs but I don't want to take the 2nd degree BB out. :)

So you are going to give me the whole guitar when I get my 2nd degree BB back? :D

What 2nd degree BB?

The one in your guitar with a broken high E string so I'll have to get a new string.

I have a Solution in one of my LPCs and a Warpig in another of my LPCs. I have also owned a Nailbomb and have used a 2nd Degree BB. All those pickups are really different so comparing them by maker doesn't make much sense. I will say that Wade is reachable by a phone call or email and will wind you pretty much whatever you want. The fact that BKP is in the UK makes it harder for us US folk to get a custom wind done, and I am not sure that he is doing them anymore as he told a buddy of mine who wanted a tweak to a Warpig that he did not have the time for custom winds anymore. He may have changed his mind since he said that though. :dunno:

Both guys make killer pickups. You'd be hard pressed to go wrong either way but the ease of talking to Wade and getting exactly what you want is a dealmaker in my eyes.

You can't compare the two brands sonically. It's not like one company sounds this way and the other company sounds that way, it's all about the individual models and which one works best for you. There's no "signature" tone each one has.

I wasn't saying brand comparison, I was saying the specific models he has tried, if he can give sonic descriptions of each.
